Will the naysayers drive Colin and Jordan apart, or will the two make their way together in this small town?
Colin Baker owns a bookstore and he’s back in Cedarwood with his son. He’s looking for a new start after a bad breakup, but he never expected that start to include his old crush, Officer Jordan Hargrove. Jordan hasn’t come out, but if he can score with Colin, then he’s all in. He’s dreamed of hot nights with the quiet man.
After a speeding ticket and some hurt feelings, sparks fly between the bookstore owner and the police officer, but Cedarwood is a small town with small-town values, and a gay couple isn’t what the town expects. Colin’s created a support group for single gay fathers and he feels he’s making some difference in Cedarwood. Some folks are fine with these two men reconnecting, but others aren’t.
Will their love survive or will it fall apart before they get started?
REVIEW:
This is a book with triggers. Severe bullying, vandalism, homophobia, hatred, bigotry, small town mindedness. It gets really hateful at times so if it’s a problem for you, be careful please.
Other than that, it’s also a story of second chances. Colin knew he was gay at a younger age and just dealt with the coming out. It wasn’t easy. It never seems to be. He also had a super crush on his baseball team, who did nothing but torment him. But what no one knew is Jordan was fighting his own battles, and they were not easy. So, even the thought of coming out and admitting he liked Colin just as much, was a no no. So he acted like a dick instead. And ruined what could have been something good between them. Fifteen years later, Colin is running behind getting his son to school and he’s speeding. Unfortunately, he’s busted and by the one person he hoped he’d never see again. Jordan. But Jordan wants to explain and make up for what he did and let Colin know, even after all these years, he still wants Colin. But Colin is adamant that his son comes first and if Gage isn’t happy, then there’s no hope. But the vandalism and the hatred in this small town is becoming too much and Colin is ready to just move and leave it all behind. Hopefully, Jordan can convince him that it will get better with time, before it’s too late.
It’s bad enough as adults that we have to deal with bullies and bigotry and such, but when the parents push that shit off on the children, it makes me so mad. That hatred kids have is learned and it makes me want to smack the parents. Colin is having to deal with so much already, but knowing his son is being bullied and getting in fights at 8 years old because Colin is gay, it’s getting too much. For all of them. Even his brother has to deal with it. They get hate mail at their business and everything. But what I love, no matter how hard life gets, is that Colin is determined to show Gage how to be the bigger man in adversity. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t fail at times or that he says a few choice words, but he has courage and integrity and is doing his best to make sure Gage grows up to be a strong young man. One with manners and compassion.
I also love how Jordan gets that Gage has to be a part of the whole wooing process. Without Gage, there is no Colin. And he gets that. He realizes that Gage has a mind of his own and he will let you know how he feels.
It’s a good match. Fifteen years in the making. It’s got some major roadblocks, but perseverance, patience and some hope and a little love can go a long way.
