On the eve of his fiftieth birthday, George’s world is pretty much a wreck. His husband of twenty years is divorcing him for a woman, a baby and a second try at life. He’s lost his job and his home, and he’s living in his brother Andrew’s spare room.
But if George has given up on himself, Drew is more optimistic. He’s hit on a daring idea for George’s fiftieth, a present he won’t soon forget.
When a handsome sex-worker called Silver knocks on the hotel-room door, George tries to send him away. But Sil is persuasive and kind, and George’s inhibitions melt away to a night of unimagined pleasures. Stranger still, when daylight comes, George’s one-night-stand man-for-hire shows every sign of wanting to stay.
But these two men are from different worlds, and George is sure it’s too late for second chances. Silver’s a mystery to him, dashing and dangerous, walking the wild side of life. A trap is closing around the silver-fox escort: will George learn to trust himself in time for Silver to be saved?
REVIEW:
Silver is a male escort. The story follows encounters that he has with three people, George, Jamie and Leonard. All three have relationship problems but in very different ways. All three people are linked and their connections add to the plot twists, so I’m only going to tell you about the one constant across them all – George.
George is still in love with – and being divorced by – his husband of twenty years, Melchior. The divorce is amicable, and George even likes Melchior’s future, very pregnant, wife. As such, there is a lot of reminiscing. Melchior’s constant presence leaves George in a funk, painfully aware of how much he gave up fostering the musical talent of his ex. His brother Andrew intervenes by hiring George an Escort for the night – Silver.
Silver never expected to be attracted to one of his clients. But, there’s something homely about George that fills a void that is missing in Silver’s life, and they strike up a friendship that lasts after their night of lust.
Escort is told in the first person from George and Silvers viewpoint. Occasionally, there is the occasional mid-paragraph slip into an alternative perspective, but they are few and far between and could well have been corrected after the final read through.
The story is set in London, and I found it lovely to read the colloquialisms of my fellow Brit’s. George’s brother, Andrews, albeit a minor star, has scene-stealing qualities. His entrance to the story is memorable, and the first words that leave his mouth make him immediately likeable. George is a kind soul that life has left scarred, and who after his breakup, let himself go a bit. Even though he is fifty, he needs to find a new place in the world. The days of him being the one accompanying Melchior are over. Silver is rather buff, charming, caring and patient. He showed a lovely nature and a little something extra, of which I’m not going to spoil the surprise.
Silver is more than a man who uses his dick to make money. He’s a chameleon able to be as visible or invisible as he pleases. The perspective of Silver is one I’ve never read before, and it made a nice change. Using a combination of sex, listening and experienced answers, he not only covered a range of topical subjects but also left each client happy to move onto the next stage of their lives. He’s part counsellor, part sex-worker, and just bloody lovely.
I found this story interesting more than erotic. With each client, Silver’s connection to George deepens, which made for a truly sweet romantic angle. George proves himself to be an exceptional human being. A hidden gem. Also, with each client, the drama and its consequences for his relationship with George, ramp up making for an action-packed finish. By the turn of the last page, the term ‘You never know who you are sleeping with,’ ran through my head.
