I came out a bit more than 30 years ago. (Scary that some people reading this might not have been born then, but I don’t wanna think about that.) A guy had a crush on found out I’d played baseball in high school and asked me if I wanted to play softball in the gay league. Naturally, when a hot guy asks you to play on his team, you say yes. Alan (don’t remember his last name any more) and I never got to first base, but I played for 20 years straight after that first year. I stopped when ‘lil q was born because, well I had a few things to deal with.
After the first year off, I could have rejoined the league, but never did. Part of me didn’t miss the every Sunday nature of the commitment. I also had parent things to do that took up my time. But I was still on the email list and still got notices.
I won’t say I missed it in the sense I was yearning to go back, but I thought about it now and then. Wondered if I should do it again. Remembered that I did enjoy it quite a bit. (I mean I played for 20 years, how bad could it be, right?) So this year I decided to see if I could still play. I’ve gone from being one of the youngest players when I started, to being in the middle when I stopped, to probably being the oldest on my team now. Funny how time doesn’t stand still.
Going to the first practice was interesting. I wasn’t sure if I’d be walking the next day. It wasn’t so bad. Today is the first week of the season. The games count. No more letting up cause it was just practice. If you don’t hear from me for a while, assume I’m in tractions.
