Some scars are on the body, while others exist only on the heart. But together, two scarred souls can find healing, love, and family.
Professional basketball player Kyle Tyson is suffocating beneath the weight of his responsibilities and his past. Childhood abuse left its mark, as did Kyle’s guilt over his sister’s death. Now he’s trying to raise his young nephew, pursue his career, and dodge a narcissistic and manipulative ex who wants to out Kyle before he’s ready.
Schoolteacher Andy Connor found comfort in food as a boy, and he bears the marks of a botched skin-tightening surgery following the dramatic weight loss that saved his life. Still, Andy is insecure about his body and can scarcely believe someone like Kyle could be interested in him. But as they get to know each other, Andy starts to see himself through new eyes. Now if he can just help Kyle learn to love himself as much as Andy is growing to love him.
REVIEW:
Damn what a book! Ok. First. TRIGGERS! This book deals in abuse, rape, close death, murder, bullying, a psycho ex and maybe a bit more. It’s hard to describe without giving away a lot of the book. However, that is enough on its own. Also, some of it is not described in great detail, but it’s enough. So if any impacts you, be careful please.
Now, having said that, it’s still a hell of a book. It deals with these issues but it also shows the importance of true family. Some blood, some not. It deals with hope and true love. Acceptance and how to care. And a wonderful little boy that makes you cry something fierce for how special he is.
This book opens on a rough note. Kyle is losing his sister. She’s literally on her deathbed. Fighting stage 4 cancer was a battle she just couldn’t win. The ONLY thing that keeps him going is knowing he has a little boy at home who’s going to need him more than ever. His nephew, Mason. He’d move heaven and earth for that little boy. After breaking up with his ex on top of it, Kyle has had all he can take. Mason keeps him going and his circle of friends who are his family. But Mason’s having a hard time, too, and it’s time to meet at school. Kyle meets the man of his dreams there, in the form of Mason’s teacher, Andy. Little by little, they get to know each other and form a relationship, with some rules for each other. And it’s perfect. Until things from Kyle’s past threaten to become a very serious part of their future. They have to get to the bottom of this and fix it before any more bad things happen, and hopefully keep their relationship strong as well.
If ever I want to crawl in a book and choke someone….. man the ex in this book is a sicko bastard. He was written well. The stuff he was pulling against Kyle and Andy. Wow.
But I was amazed with both of these men. Kyle, with all he’s been through, is one of the most compassionate, tender hearted people you will ever see. He takes care of his own. Even when he’s on the road, he does all he can. He’s been beaten down by life in so many ways, but he’s come out on top. And he keeps fighting. The way he loves Mason and raises him. With Andy, he’s so considerate and shows Andy what a beauty he really is.
Andy hasn’t had it easy either. He’s almost died twice and has physical scars that leave him wary of people. He’s been torn down by people who see his scars and treat him badly for it. When Kyle shows him such love with his body, it made me cry. It was such a beautiful experience.
I am so ready for the next book. I absolutely loved this book. It has some hard times in it, but the love, the hope, the family bonds make everything worthwhile.
