Spoiler Alert! The following blurb contains spoilers for Cash Plays, book three of Seven of Spades.
Shattered by their devastating breakup, Detective Levi Abrams and PI Dominic Russo find themselves at war right when they need each other most. While Dominic is trapped in a vicious cycle of addiction, Levi despairs of ever catching the Seven of Spades. The ruthless vigilante’s body count continues to climb, and it’s all Levi can do to keep up with the carnage.
When Levi’s and Dominic’s paths keep crossing in the investigation of a kidnapping ring with a taste for mutilation, it feels like history repeating itself. Thrown together by fate once again, they reluctantly join forces in their hunt for the mastermind behind the abductions.
But the Seven of Spades hates sharing the spotlight, and they have an ace in the hole: a new batch of victims with a special connection to Levi. Their murders send shockwaves through Las Vegas and change the rules of the game forever.
The Seven of Spades has upped the ante. If Levi and Dominic don’t play their cards right, they’ll end up losing everything.
REVIEW:
Holy moly!
I thought that Cash Plays was intense, but let me tell you it had nothing on this book. Nothing.
I might also have said something about the plot being predictable (with the disclaimer that I also might have to eat some crow in book five when it’s all revealed). Let’s just sat that I need to start eating that crow early, because I did not predict that. That madness that was this book in so many ways and layers. I did not predict that. I’m still as convinced of the identity of the Seven of Spades (I won’t tell you who as I don’t want to spoil it for you), but that’s as far as my predictions go. Speaking of spoilers, if you haven’t read the first three books in the series – which you really need to do, then this review might contain spoilers for them. So go back and start from the beginning and come back to this later.
One-Eyed Royals picks up a few months after Levi and Dominic broke up in Cash Plays. They are still broken up and Dominic is still gambling. They are also both madly in love with each other, but the hurt and mistrust not to mention manipulations are very present in all of their interactions. It’s painful to watch. Watch them love each other, wanting and needing the other, only to be left standing and bleeding from even more wounds every time they part. It’s tearing them both apart, especially knowing how deep they feel for each other.
One thing is for sure, Kingsbridge must enjoy making her men suffer. Because boy do they suffer in this one. It’s non-stop, one hardship after the other. Then mental anguish, playing with their lives and minds. And it’s not that what happened in this book are insulated happenings, but this has been going on for a year, ever since the Seven of Spades first started to play their twisted game. And with no relief or ending in sight, it’s no wonder that everyone are starting to crack.
There was some talk of an end game, nothing specific more that there was going to be one and that it was going to be big. After this book it has me terrified. Because if the Seven of Spades is capable of this, there really isn’t a limit to what they will do to reach their goals. And with that kind of cliffhanger, I’m definitely putting today’s plans on hold and diving right into the next one.
