A retired SEAL is about to face his toughest assignment yet. As a nanny…
Fixer. Bodyguard. Advocate. Brann Calder is expected to play all these roles and more as a member of Torus Intercession, a security firm guaranteed to right what’s wrong. In the military, catastrophe was his specialty. Five months out of the service, Brann is still finding his way, so a new assignment might be just what he needs. Unless it includes two things sure to make a seasoned, battle-trained veteran nervous: life in a small town, and playing caregiver to two little girls.
Emery Dodd is drowning in the responsibility of single fatherhood. He’s picked up the pieces after losing his wife and is ready to move on now, hopeful that his engagement to a local patriarch’s daughter will not only enrich his community but will grant his daughters some stability too.
The only thing standing in Emery’s way is that he can’t seem to keep his eyes—and hands—off the former soldier he’s hired to watch his girls until the wedding.
Emery’s future is riding on his upcoming nuptials, but being with Brann makes him and his family feel whole again. Too bad there’s no way for them to be together.
Or is there?
REVIEW:
Brann Calder is a rough and tough soldier…except for the fact that his heart is really kind of soft.
Emery Dodd is a father looking to do the right thing for his kids and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to get that done, even if it means marrying someone he doesn’t love.
When I open a Mary Calmes book, I know that I can count on this author to give me character that are easy to connect to and that speak in a certain familiar voice. It’s almost like visiting old friends, even with brand new characters and a new story.
Brann and Emery don’t let me down. Their connection is instant…a lightning strike of emotion that made me smile from the first time they met.
These two men are so alike in nature, so willing to give up everything they want to do the right thing for Emery’s kids, and it’s adorable. Olivia and April, Emery’s girls and his whole life, are typical little girls, full of fun and questions and doing their best to take care of their dad, like he takes care of them. It doesn’t take long before both girls are as head over heels for Brann, just like their father.
We meet several other interesting characters in this book, including Emery’s intended Lydia, Brann’s boss and also his best friend and brother in arms, Huck. I really hope the next books lets us get to know him a little better.
I did have a couple of issues though, and they mostly revolve around how quickly everything happens, especially with the kids. I have looked after other people’s kids my whole life and so maybe that’s why I had a hard time suspending my belief that it would be so easy for the kids to accept Brann and the changes in their father’s life.
Just everything happens too fast for my liking. I would have liked to seen the struggle last a little longer because I know that nothing is ever that easy with kids.
I did like seeing the soft side of Brann. There’s nothing I like better than a big, bad military man turning to mush, not only for the kids but also for the man he’s falling for. And Emery? His dedication to his kids and his acceptance of Brann is so heartwarming and it was easy to fall for him.
As always, the author leaves me dying for more and I can’t wait to see where she goes with this series. And I can’t wait to find out who the next book is about.
