Making eye contact with a killer wasn’t exactly how Bradley Danforth had planned to start his day. As an accountant, he craved structure and routine. What he hadn’t anticipated was being part of a real-life murder mystery with him cast in the starring role.
Death and sorrow were part of Max Donohue’s job description, leaving the detective hardened after years on the job. On his latest case, he’s the one stuck protecting the only witness in a sadistic homicide.
One death becomes two… then three. And soon Max and Bradley find themselves playing a deadly game of cat and mouse. Can Max save Bradley from the clutches of a serial killer? Or will the killer finish what he started?
At a Stranger’s Mercy is the first installment of a continuing series featuring the same two characters. It’s a suspenseful murder mystery that depicts detailed crimes, strong language, and adult situations. While this series will include a romance, it’s a slow burn that develops throughout the series.

“You have got to be fucking shitting me,” I groaned as my cell phone started ringing.
It was early in the evening, but I’d finally lain down and closed my eyes for the first time in almost twenty-four hours. I was fucking exhausted and in desperate need of sleep. My body was trembling with fatigue, and my eyes were so heavy it was hard to keep them open. Why was someone calling my goddamn phone?
“Someone better be dead,” I growled into the phone, my eyes still closed and my head on my incredibly soft pillow.
“Someone is. It’s brutal. You need to get here right away,” the officer who I recognized as Hugo Richmond said before rattling off a street address.
“I fucking hate you,” I grumbled before I disconnected the call.
Not that Hugo cared if I expressed my hatred or hung up on him. I nearly whimpered in pain when I forced myself to sit up—my head instantly missing the comforts of my pillow—and get off the bed. Grabbing a clean set of clothes, I quickly pulled them on, splashed some water on my face, and pulled my long hair into a bun. After shoving my feet into my shoes, I grabbed my keys and dragged my exhausted ass back to my car.
Being a homicide detective definitely had its downfalls: erratic workhours, barely any time for a personal life—or a quick hook-up—and seeing your fair share of blood and gore. Throw in the fact I lived in a relatively small town with a police department to match, and I was working all the time because murders happened even in the smallest of towns.
My body sighed as I climbed back inside my car and started the engine. I felt like sighing with it to be honest, but I knew the sooner I arrived at the crime scene, the sooner I could go home for a couple hours of sleep. The murder-suicide a few days prior had really screwed up my already erratic sleeping pattern, and this just threw it off even more.
Brittany was born in a small town in Alabama and moved to Indiana when she was thirteen years old. She currently resides there and works as an operator at a local hospital. When she isn’t working, she loves to spend her free time writing stories, playing with her puppy, Delilah, watching television, and spending time with loved ones.
The intrigue! I love it!
i love the WHO DONE IT!!!
I love the build of suspence and the who did it.
I quite like a procedural that builds up from clues.
