Love, served extra dirty.
Jesse Murtagh loves his life as a wealthy bisexual businessman dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure. With a circle of friends he trusts implicitly, he enjoys a successful career in his family’s business and as co-owner of Under, an uptown speakeasy, with his friend with benefits, Kyle McKee.
Music teacher and part-time DJ Cameron Lewis lives modestly in a DUMBO loft and isn’t interested in serious relationships. However, he’s always up for some casual fun.
Doing a favor for his friend Carter Hamilton, Jesse meets Cam and is immediately charmed. When Jesse discovers Cam’s other life as a DJ, he is further intrigued. Viewing Cam as a challenge, Jesse pulls out all the stops, but his usual methods to avoid serious relationships fail. Though Cam has no intention of becoming attached, he begins to fall for Jesse, unaware that Jesse’s feelings are changing.
Afraid of heartbreak, Cam pulls away, leaving Jesse bewildered and hurt. They remain friends until a series of misunderstandings widens the rift to breaking point. When Cam steps in to help Jesse through a family crisis, they realize they care for each other more than they’ve been willing to admit. Jesse and Cam don’t want a traditional relationship, but can they build a future that makes them both happy?
REVIEW:
Jesse is one of New York’s most sought-after bachelors. He has a mind for business and a body for sin, and he uses them both to great effect. He is co-owner of the speakeasy called Under alongside his friend with benefits, Kyle. Jesse doesn’t believe in monogamy, nor does he restrict his encounters to men only. He doesn’t begrudge anyone wanting or having their happy ever after, with one person, it just wasn’t for him.
During the day, Cam teaches music at elementary school. Evenings he is a DJ at club Ember. Like Jesse, he too is happy to play the field and remain a bachelor. Cam and Jesse encounter one another when Jesse picks up his friends’ son from school.
When Cam and Jesse meet again at Ember, Jesse’s reputation precedes him and Cam turns his advances down. Not used to rejection, Jesse gets the bit between his teeth and rises to the challenge. It doesn’t take long for both to become smitten, but given their lifestyles, there could be heartbreak or something not the norm in their future.
Told in the third person from Cam and Jesse’s viewpoint, the story is intensely detailed and dialogue heavy. Both men are incredibly sexual beings – thus, there is a LOT of sex. Indeed, the story starts with the finances for Under doing very well and a celebratory sex scene. Although sex makes up a good portion of the story, it is balanced by an emotional journey, too.
The tale of Cam and Jesse is different from other’s I’ve read. Cam hooked up with Jesse with his eyes wide open, so when he started getting emotionally involved, he knew he was fucked. What followed was an examination and realignment of expectations and a rethinking of what is essential in a relationship. There is also a delightful threesome that would leave anyone needing a cold shower.
I enjoyed the humour throughout this story, and the angst continues for more than a few pages which is something I liked. Far too often I read stories where an author doesn’t make as much as they could of the heartache moments. In Extra Dirty, it was just right for me.
Jesse is unique, and I couldn’t help liking him. Cam, too. But Jesse is the star. His intelligence, his big heart, as well as his sexual prowess is showcased.
As already said, sex is a significant component of Extra Dirty, but I don’t believe it made the story. It is a part of who Cam and Jesse are. I enjoyed watching their enlightenment and re-evaluation of relationships – more importantly, deciding what was right for them.
