Welcome Sean 🙂
Thank you to Love Bytes for hosting me today!
In the Personal Best novels, one of the things that Coach Jessy does is cut certain foods out of Mike’s diet. Stuff like pizza, which Mike would eat all the time if he could, but that isn’t helping him with his training. I, personally, love food and would have a really hard time with someone saying you can’t eat x anymore. (I find diets excruciating.)
I thought it would be fun to do a top ten list of things I would not like to be banned from eating.
Top Ten Foods I Don’t Want to Give Up
- Ice Cream – I don’t eat a ton of it, but I’ll go on a kick where I’ll have it at least once a day for a week or so.
- Poutine – fries, cheese curds and gravy – what’s not to love about this heart attack on a plate?
- Hamburgers – I am probably going to have to give these up soon enough as they almost always sit like lead in my belly – but they taste so good!
- Fries – while I love a good poutine, I don’t think there’s any such thing as a bad fry…
- Chicken Fingers – I like mine dipped in plum sauce
- Pogos – known as corn dogs in most of the world, they are called pogos here and if you’ve got some sweet mustard to dip them into, they are a weakness.
- Ketchup – I don’t put it on absolutely everything (like not on eggs or grilled cheese sandwiches for instance) but there are certain things that just taste better with it – hamburgers and fries, for instance
- Caramel – it’s my sweet weakness. Not chocolate, not candy, but almost anything caramel. My absolute favorite is the pecan caramel bites from Purdy’s chocolate, but I’m not incredibly picky when it comes to caramel.
- Bread – I have tried giving bread up in the past as it’s lots and lots of carbs, but man, I like my bread. I like making it, I like eating it, and whenever I give it up entirely, my stomach always protests in some way or another.
- Chips – omg, I love the crunchy salty things far more than I should – just the crunching helps relieve stress. I have tried to give these up on a regular basis (and failed!)
Blurb:
Swimmer Mike Gauliet is on his way to an Olympic berth, sitting on the edge of fulfilling his potential and achieving the dreams his coach and lover, Jessy Turner, has for both of them.
All Mike wants to think about is swimming his laps faster than anyone else. Too bad things aren’t going exactly according to plan. Mike’s getting threats, and he’s afraid to tell Jessy and determined to handle things alone.
When the threats escalate to the point where Mike can’t hide them, though, Jessy takes over, moving Mike to a new training location, promising to keep him safe. Mike and Jessy try to go on with business as usual, but someone has such hatred for Mike that it seeps into their everyday life, straining their relationship, making Mike wonder if he even wants to swim anymore. Danger lurks around every corner, in and out of the pool, and while Mike and Jessy work with the police to discover the culprit, one attack leaves their life in shambles. Can Mike and Jessy find their attacker and get Mike back on track to a championship?

Jessy filled a couple of glasses with juice and headed for the deck. He frowned at himself in the mirror. His hair was getting long and showing the gray . Time for a cut. He didn’t want people thinking he was Mike’s father. Chuckling at himself, he put their juice on the patio table and went to sit in his deck chair, watching Mike swim laps.
Mike was looking good, pulling strong through the water. Jessy could see it was getting close to time to rein him in, though. The kid’s form was just a little sloppy, Mike getting just a little tired.
He went and turned down the music Mike swam to, crouching near one end of the pool.
Just like clockwork, Mike’s head popped up when he hit the wall, dark eyes blinking at him. “Yeah, Coach?”
“That’s enough for today, Mike. Come have a juice and sit a spell.”
“But….” Mike pulled himself up. “What kind of juice?”
He chuckled. “Orange.” He wrapped Mike in a towel and led the kid over to the patio table.
Mike drank deeply, throat working as he drained the glass. “Oh. Good.”
“Speaking of good, you’re looking great out there. You’re going to be at the top of your game for the National Qualifier.”
Truth was, Mike swam like a dream on an off day. When he was happy and working hard and concentrating, Jessy didn’t believe anyone anywhere in the world right now could beat his swimmer.
“Yeah? Cool. I haven’t had pizza in days.” Mike plopped down into a chair. “What’s on tonight’s agenda?”
“Not pizza,” Jessy teased. He leaned over and spiked up Mike’s blond-tipped hair. “I was thinking we could watch a movie or two. See what came up.”
Mike leaned into the touch, humming softly. They’d been lovers so long, and Mike was still eager for each touch. “No. I took the stuff out for chicken sandwiches earlier.”
“Sounds good. I’ve got some sponsor agreements to go over with you as well, but it can wait until tomorrow if you want to relax for the rest of the day.”
“Does that mean I have to eat weird stuff or hock cell phones?”
“Not this time. I told Sunkist you drink orange juice by the crateful, and they were immediately interested. And there’s a camera company, and Speedo wants to see you.”
“Oh, cool.” Mike grinned , eyes twinkling.
“They said something about making a Mike Gauliet line.”
“They did not….” Mike, his sweet just-let-me-swim lover, just had no clue. None.
“They did too. They wanted to talk to you, though, about what you like, your favorite colors and stuff. Something about getting you together with a designer.” Sponsors were sometimes a pain, but that’s what let them live where they did, paid his salary, took care of Mike’s needs.
“Weird.” Mike shook his head. “Like anyone wants swim trunks with my name on them.”
“Just you wait. All the kids are going to want to be you when they grow up.” Christ, Mike was cute. Adorable really. “We’ve got a bit of time before we make supper. Unless you’re really hungry.”
One eyebrow raised and Mike smiled wide. “Yeah? You wanting to play, Jessy?”
He shrugged casually. “If you do, baby.”
God, he loved that laugh, husky and happy and full of life. “Always. Forever.”

I don’t I could give up pizza.
I guess I can’t type today. I meant to say that I don’t think I could give up pizza.
I think I can give up stuff but I won’t like it. I went on a very low sugar diet before and gave up pastry items and sweets (candy, chocolate, etc) for a year. This year I had to give up seafood for health reasons and was told to eat a very low fat diet also so I’ve given up red meat and have lowered my intake of any pork item. I think chips and potato items are my weakness and I would hate life if that was taken from me.
Most of the big family arguments in my house have involved distribution of French fries…
