BLURB:
You can’t bargain with death if you’ve already sold your soul.
Special Agent Patrick Collins has been reassigned by the Supernatural Operations Agency to New York City. Navigating his new relationship with Jonothon de Vere, the werewolf he’s now soulbound to, is nothing compared to dealing with territorial disputes between the vampires and werecreatures who call the five boroughs home. But the delicate treaties that have kept the preternatural world in check are fraying at the edges, and the fallout is spilling into the mundane world.
Manhattan’s club scene is overrun with the vampire drug known as shine and the subways have become a dumping ground for bodies. When the dead are revealed as missing werecreatures, Patrick and Jono find themselves entangled in pack politics twisted by vampire machinations.
Learning to trust each other comes with problems for both of them, and the gods with a stake in Patrick’s soul debt aren’t finished with him yet. Bound by promises they can’t break, Patrick and Jono must find a way to survive a threat that takes no prisoners and is stalking them relentlessly through the city streets.
Old and new betrayals are coming home to roost but the truth—buried in blood—is more poisonous than the lies being spun. Trying to outrun death is a nightmare—one Patrick may never wake up from.
All Souls Near & Nigh is a 104k word m/m urban fantasy with a gay romantic subplot and a HFN ending. It is a direct sequel to A Ferry of Bones & Gold, and reading the first book in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one. Please see the disclaimer at the beginning of the book for content some readers may find triggering.
REVIEW:
First, check the bottom of the blurb. Possible triggers so be aware.
If I ever thought this book couldn’t get better than book 1, I would be dead wrong. This book, this series has just been outstanding! I love these characters. Even the assholes have such a great personality as far as they are concerned. You just love to hate them.
If I felt for anyone though, it is definitely Patrick. That man cannot catch a break no matter what he does. He can’t even heal properly before someone else is calling in a favor or something. This time he owes a favor to one being he absolutely hates with a passion. Lucien, the daywalker. Lucien is looking to over take what he considers his territory from one of his ‘children’ and he wants Patrick to help. He and Jono are side by side stepping into matters that turn grimmer than they could have thought. And Patrick is dreading it worse. Of course there are gods involved and that means the worst kind of trouble. But considering what Lucien’s ‘child’, Tremaine, is up to, Patrick and Jono have no choice but to step in and try to fix what’s happening. But the stakes are dire, in every aspect, and no one knows who’s going to survive this one. Even Jono and Patrick are worried for themselves and each other. But neither is going down without a fight and they will protect each other and their pack with every inch of their lives.
As bad as I feel for Patrick, I almost feel for Jono more. With Jono, he can be killed but it’s a lot harder. Especially with his little friend tucked inside. But for Patrick, he’s human. Jono has to watch each and every bump Patrick gets and trust he will be ok. All while wondering which hit is going to be his last. Not that he tries to think about it, but it’s there. Watching someone you love like that can be torture. And Jono was also having to step into roles now he never really wanted to. But the alternative wasn’t an option. People need put in their place for what they were doing and Jono would do so any way he could.
For Patrick, it’s like a never ending cycle. Everyone seems to want a piece of him, and he’s already broken into enough pieces. He’s barely hanging on by a thread most days and a lot of those days he’s hanging on because of Jono. Jono is everything to him. The prices people are wanting him to pay this time seem to get worse and worse. Each step he takes, takes him farther into darkness. Tremaine and his little flunkies are determined to end him and in a bad way. Not that death, in itself, is good.
The horrifying part of this book is what Tremaine’s little flunkies are doing to other shifters. It all connects and weaves you into a story that has you rooting for even bad guys. Because those bad guys are better than Tremaine and his group. Bad, worse and worst of all.
It’s a story of good and evil, hope and destruction. It’s a page turner that will make you laugh, cry, and rage at the injustice. It will have you rooting for people you never thought you would in order to save some who are good. And with the way it leaves off, and the new characters that are involved, I cannot wait to see where this journey continues. Maybe Patrick can sweep Jono off to a vacation somewhere lol. I hope you guys are into this as much as I am.
