Former helicopter pilot Maverick Delgardo’s injuries ended his Air Force career, leaving him bitter and one drink away from becoming an alcoholic. When his sister asks for his help on a private protection case to babysit a disgraced pop star, Mav reluctantly agrees.
Deacon Daniels, one time lead singer and idol to his teenage fans, saw his career and reputation ruined when a reporter’s exposé led to a devastating scandal. Without money or a job, a heartbroken Deacon has lost custody of his baby niece. And just when he thinks his life can’t get any worse, a stalker’s threatening messages escalate to murder.
Mav only agreed to one meeting, but his protective instincts kick in, along with an attraction to Deacon. When the body count increases, however, Mav is unsure he is up to the task of protecting Deacon from a killer. But it is too late for Mav to step away, now that he’s lost his heart, and he must find the strength to reassure Deacon and his niece that they are in safe hands no matter the cost.
REVIEW:
Gah, what a book! I could not put this book down. It is a complete page turner. I didn’t know whether to bite my nails, pull my hair, or what! Such a thriller. And the characters are so amazing. Each having their own issues that would normally send some people screaming. But for me, they were endearing. They’ve been beaten, broken, and they are holding on by their toenails it seems, but they’re strong, courageous, and fierce. Even when they don’t feel like it. They’re fighters.
One drink more and he was done. That seems to be Maverick’s line of thinking lately. Life just sucked. With the burn scars all over him and losing his most of his right leg when a suicide bomber got to them, he just feels like life is over. He’s tired of the looks people give him. He’s tired of the guilt that never seems to go away, and he’s really upset that he can’t do the job he loved to do. Be a pilot. He’s just ‘surviving’ on his sister’s couch. And now she’s bothering him to do him a favor. He owes her that. In all this time, she’s never asked him for anything. He will do this for her.
Meeting with Deacon Daniels sounds like SUCH a thrill. Not. But the more he talks to Deacon, the more he feels bad. He missed judged him. And Deacon is in real danger. People are dying around him. Threats are being made. And he’s being followed. He’s almost died himself. Deacon is terrified. He’s lost everything. He’s band, his home, his guardianship of his niece, his friends. Everything. All because someone had a brilliant idea that was really stupid. And no one believes it wasn’t him. But Mav does. Mav believes him. And Deacon is giving Mav a reason to get up and live again. But with all that’s going on, neither one may live for long. The cops are digging but no one can seem to find a clue. Mav and Deacon hope someone finds something before it’s really too late.
This is so much my kind of book. Such a thriller. I loved every single page. My heart broke for Mav. It broke for Deacon too. Both of these guys have been through absolute hell. And it started from an early age. Their pasts were shitty, but they rose above it. But each had things happen, that put their lives in hell. Mav with the military. Deacon with stupid people. What finally broke me, though, just made me ugly cry, was little Molly. I’m not giving it away, but man, when they say out of the mouths of babes, they aren’t kidding. Such innocence. But what she does would make adults weep. And this one did.
The other thing that got me was when the figured out who was doing these things and why. I never saw it coming. I think I need to start watching more murder mysteries and such because I’m losing my touch lol. Completely took me by surprise.
What I love the most of this book, is they way they both fight. Mav had basically given up all hope. Meeting Deacon gave him a reason to try again. Yes, I know you have to do things for yourself and not really someone else, but sometimes you need motivation to give that little push you need. And Deacon gave Mav hope. Mav gave Deacon something he desperately needed. Someone who believed him and I him. That quiet strength.
Such an amazing book. I loved everyone of these characters. It is so well written. And I’m so glad I got the chance to read it. It’s one of those I will want to reread over and over again.
