REVIEW:
Rohan was the named heir in waiting to the SmallQ tech empire. He wanted Duke – the CEO’s son, but Duke was his cousin – there could be nothing between them. Once upon a time, Rohan and Duke were close, but their relationship of late was strained, even more so when Duke became bratty. Seven years separated them, but Duke worshipped Rohan. The man had been like an older brother and looked after him more than Duke’s own parents. Daring Duke is a modern tale of the wealthy falling in love with the forbidden.
From the off, the blurb says that this story is about cousin’s loving each other. So, it will be like marmite to some. If cousin love makes you uncomfortable, then don’t pick up the book. If you are curious – go for it, it’s a chance worth taking. Cousins dating is legal, especially second cousins, which is what Rohan and Duke are, and I enjoyed the way this tale was told.
The story is told in the third person and is technically sound. The short length makes for a punchy ditty with a small cast.
Due to their growing up as friends/relatives, Rohan more so than Duke is conscious that he shouldn’t want his cousin – but the heart wants what the heart wants. Duke flirts with Rohan, but the man resists. Thereby, a game of cat and cat is played, one acting like a cocky brat and being thwarted by experience and patience.
Older by several years, his position in SmallQ, the fact that he’s in the closet, and a need to uphold his reputation make Rohan a serious, responsible man with an efficient work ethic – mm delicious. The distance between himself and Duke has put Rohan out of touch with who the man behind the bratty façade is. The question for Rohan is how long he can go before giving in to desire.
I loved the way this story played out. Rohan tries his hardest to resist Duke which made me want to see them together. Being the only person who gave his cousin boundaries, put him closer to Duke, thus testing his own limits. Duke is an angry young man, who is hiding something, and this is all revealed in its own good time.
Given its length, it is difficult to say anything without giving away too much of the plot. What I will say is that the arc did not stray from it’s given path. Tension increased with each turn of the page. The characters were delightfully flawed with both pushing the boundaries of the other, and the more I read, the more I liked it and the more I wanted them to be together.
