Hello all, it’s time for spring break! While many will be off at the beach or spending time with kiddos that are out of school, I shall be writing. Or at least trying to. I’ve been running into some serious writer’s block for the past several months and recently started researching ways around said block. There are plenty of blog posts and Author articles with ideas, suggestions and theories, but I was looking for something more concrete and proven. A very good friend and fellow Author suggested I grab a book from Amazon and read it… 5,000 words per hour: write faster, write smarter by Chris Fox. This isn’t just another this is what I did and it worked for me so it must work for you type of book folks. The best way I can think to describe it is a study manual of sorts. Fox has ideas and suggestions to help you push past your own bad habits that are likely not only slowing you down, but affecting your writing all together. I love that Fox gives you techniques to try as you follow along in his book, timed writing, blocking out distractions and so forth. I, myself, am a huge edit as I go person and that is a big no no! It’s very difficult to retrain yourself though after you’ve already ingrained the bad habit in your brain, but, it can be done. Fox has an entire collection of what I’ll refer to as self help for Authors books for sale and I’ll be honest, I’ve only purchased the one thus far and while it’s a slow, tedious process to teach myself these new, better writing habits; I’m liking his approach so far.
Another issue I’ve always had is writing my synopsis. I’m terrible at this, I’ll giveaway the entire story in two paragraphs people. My friend recommended another book to me… How to Write a Sizzling Synopsis: A Step-by-Step System for Enticing New Readers, Selling More Fiction, and Making Your Books Sound Good by Bryan Cohen. Now, I’ve purchased but not started reading this one yet as I’m waiting to conquer my bad habits with the help of Chris Fox’s book first, so I can’t speak to my thoughts on this one yet. But several Author’s I know swear by it, say it’s been an invaluable tool in helping them create a more precise synopsis without spoilers.
Lately I’ve been jittery about interviews, since I don’t get approval of the final edit and I’m terrified that somehow I’ll end up pissing people off. Usually I can work through it, but I feel kind of flop-sweaty lately…
I normally wait patiently, I do understand writer’s block. It happens with many things, not only writing, but I happen to have tried writing myself, and I’ve soon discovered the terrible pressure of the white page…. So, yes, I wait fo my fav authors to deliver, no matter how long… 😉
Congrats Susana Perez, you are the winner, email me please…. tammystwocents@gmail.com
i really enjoyed the blog post
Authors have lives just like readers do. It’s understandable when books get delayed, sometimes the characters just don’t want to talk. There’s an author I found a few years back, when you go to their Amazon profile the first two books in their series was 2010. I just checked and 2 new books will be out at the end of this year; you can bet I will be buying the paperbacks to go with the first two in the series that I already own. Waiting for authors is not a problem I have.
I wait patiently for the most part
