FIVE JOBS. FIVE CHANCES FOR REDEMPTION. One thing’s for sure: these men are no angels.
There’s nothing like being blackmailed by a dead man to really bring a group of cons together. And what a group we are: a hacker, a thief, a con artist, a thug, and a Federal agent with an axe to grind. The deal is simple, we do the jobs and Charlie’s lawyer wipes the slate clean for each of us, one at a time.
Since job number one calls for some muscle, it looks like I’m up first. I’m Steele Alvarez, ex-Special Forces Close Protection Specialist (aka, a bodyguard for some not so nice guys).
After learning what the job is — taking down a seemingly untouchable senator with a penchant for beating up young male prostitutes — I’m in. No questions. A bullet ought to do the trick.
Then I met Senator Harlan’s latest victim: Breck Pfeiffer, the gorgeous hooker with a heart of gold and the soul of a fighter. One look at him and I’m gone. That kid laid me out harder than any punch ever did. I’ll do anything to protect Breck, even kill for him. But Breck doesn’t want the senator dead, he wants vengeance.
If we’re going to find a way bring down the slimebag and get the blackest mark on my record erased, I’m going to need all the help I can get.
Like it or not, we’re all in this together.
REVIEW:
I didn’t see it but there may be some triggers. Some violence as far as a beating is mentioned and one of the guys tells of a past incident in trying to take a baddie down. It’s not bad but be careful.
Damn. And double damn. I was not prepared for what a kick ass book this was. The characters, though criminals, are seriously good guys. Cocky, stubborn, with a bit of a past, but with hearts that really want to do the right thing. And even though they may be criminals, their motives, most of the time are for good.
Five guys were invited to the funeral of Charlie. Five guys invited by lawyer Miranda and a guy, who at this point, is nameless. Four of these guys have one thing in common. They’re criminals. And being looked at as some of the most wanted possibly. The other is a Fed, but on leave. All have Charlie in common. Charlie is holding something on most of them, and in return, to get their names ‘clear’, Charlie has left instructions with Miranda for jobs for them to do. Righting a wrong. Setting things straight. These five are to form a team and complete the tasks. Each on leading one case. First up leading is Special Forces veteran Castille Alvarez. Steele for short. And the first assignment hits close to home. Very close. One of the teams members has a twin brother in serious trouble with a not nice man in a high up position and they need to bring him down. And protect the twin and his friend. The only problem is, Breck, the twin, has knocked Steele for a loop. Something about Breck makes Steele want to love and protect him. The chemistry off the charts. Steele wants Breck’s abuser dead for what he did. Breck wants vengeance. Now they have to figure out how to compromise and take this guy down while trying to stay alive.
This book was so good and so fun. Some of the first part of the book is figuring each other out and planning. The rest more action. But the planning even gives you a laugh. There’s ribbing, snarkiness, and quips that make tears roll down your face from laughing. At least for me. There’s angst and heartache. And the characters all bring something different to the table.
For Steele, when he found out what the job was, he was in no holds barred. The others too. Especially with one being Breck’s twin. That’s what I loved about these guys. Even with things they have done wrong, they try to do what’s right. Steele had an incident when he was in the military that should have landed him in hot water. He knew that. His team knew that. But they had to do what was right and they did. It unfortunately, got him stuck in this position he was in now but he didn’t care if it meant freeing Breck and his friend and taking an assholes like this down.
For Breck, vengeance doesn’t make things magically better. He knows that. It doesn’t take the past away. Doesn’t wipe away what was done. For him, it was seeing the guy pay for what he did and was doing to others. Showing him he wasn’t king like he thought. And it was also about freedom. Knowing he and his friend could walk through life and not have to constantly look over their shoulders. Or anyone else for that matter.
It’s true. Vengeance doesn’t make everything all better. For every bad asshole, there is another to take their place. But for some, well most, it’s the freedom and the feeling they have taken control back of their lives. And that’s what Breck needed. And his friend.
I absolutely can not wait to see how this series goes. I loved this book so much. I really think it can only get better from here. I hope you guys love it too.
