Kurt Foster is a ghost, killed by the man he loved, unable to move on until he can prove he was murdered. But how can he do that?
Detective Mike Harris and Sage Crewe, Mike’s lover and a medium who talks to ghosts, both knew Kurt. When his death is deemed a suicide, they don’t believe it. With the help of ghosts Brody and Jon, they go to Kurt’s apartment, looking for anything to prove he might have been murdered. Kurt is there and he tells them what happened.
Will Mike and Sage, with the help of Brody, Jon, and a third ghost named Tonio, be able to come up with the evidence to back Kurt’s claim? While they try, will Tonio finally accept it’s time for him to move on, or will helping Kurt make him realize there’s more to life — and death — than losing the man he once loved?
REVIEW:
Kurt thought George was everything a boyfriend could be. They were happy, or so he thought, until the day George killed him. To add insult to … death … Kurt was skinny dipping when he was murdered, so he woke in the same state – naked.
Sage and Mike are mortal ghost detectives. Mike is an actual police detective, too. Brody and Jon are their ghostly cohorts who are already taking care of Tonio, the ghost from Searching For My Killer. When Mike learns that an acquaintance of theirs has died, they don’t believe it was suicide and investigate. In the process, they run into Kurt. When Kurt confirms that he was murdered, it is up to the team to find George and get a confession out of him.
Told in the third person with thoughts and dialogue in the first person, this was a fast-moving story that I enjoyed. Sex is implied, not demonstrated, as the tale takes prime spot. Other than a couple of silly spelling mistakes, the story is technically sound.
Every ghost and human have their part to play. Brody, Jon and Tonio help Kurt adjust to his new life. Though, Kurt isn’t the only one having problems. Tonio is having trouble too. David, his still mortal boyfriend from the previous novel, has a new man in his life. It was lovely to Kurt and Tonio help the other move on. The ghostly troop also provide some comic relief, showing the plus side of being a ghost.
Kurt is a good man, and he is plagued with questions as to why he was murdered. Thankfully, Detective Mike is on the case, and he soon discovers things about George that take him to the top of his wanted list. It’s not so … simply … a case of proving it.
Dead and hating it is a short story. Thus, it doesn’t go into great depth or get complicated. Unlike Searching For My Killer, we know who the murder is. Dangerous situations are also in short supply. Nevertheless, this is a sweet ditty that one can read at any time of day, is entertaining and has the ghostly detectives increasing their band of brothers.
