Matthew, Luke, and Richard return in this third installment of the MORE series.
These three men have weathered a lot, and their love for one another is as strong as ever. Yet Matthew Stewart, the youngest of the threesome, can’t help but feel like he’s made one too many mistakes lately, both with his men and his future. His perfect life is starting to crumble around him. Haunted by a past he’s never truly faced and struggling to find his place in the world, he sets his sights on a new dream job at a wildlife rehabilitation center. With more than just a great job on the line, he refuses to turn his back on someone in need. A favor morphs into danger as Matthew, Luke, and Richard face a week alone in the wilderness, looking for evidence of either an accident or a crime. With no hiking experience and armed strangers trying to hunt them down, these three men will learn to lean on each other more than ever. And in the process, they just might heal more than one old wound.
REVIEW:
This is one of my favourite ménage series, and I’ve been so impatient waiting for this third story, Matthew’s story to be released. This review includes spoilers for the previous two books in the series. You need to have read the first two books before picking up this one, but for anyone who has forgotten what happened at the end of the last book…here’s some quick backstory.
More Than Ever begins several months after the end of book two, when our threesome had a scare in bed after Matthew pretended he wanted Richard to fist him. Before the deed happened Richard and Luke realized that Matthew had lied about his desire to try that certain bit of kink, thinking he was giving the other men what they wanted. In actual fact, Matthew was pretty terrified to try it, and his partners were horrified that he’d broken their trust by lying to them. Since then, our main characters have been pretending that it’s business as usual, but most of the first part of this story deals with the fallout from that incident. While their relationship remains solid throughout the whole story, it’s not all smooth sailing just yet. What I love about these characters is that between the three of them there is always one that is willing to force the other two to talk about what might be bothering them. Something that they’ve learned is important after all the secrets and hurts from the first books.
From the very start Matthew has been the cute younger partner who struggles with feelings of inadequacy. He sees Richard and Luke as confident, self assured and smart, and himself as the pretty young bimbo. He knows that his men love him, but he doesn’t feel like an equal. This installment finds Matthew at the point in his schooling when he needs to start work placement, and he has his heart set on working at a wildlife rehabilitation center attached to a national park. While the beginning of this story focuses on the men’s relationship, with the wildlife center in the background, once we hit the 40% mark, that focus flips the other way. As with the other books in the series, More Than Ever features a bit of a violent mystery, and this was my favourite of the three. This plot twist finds our men hiking through forest in search of a missing man, having no clue which of our array of secondary characters might be trust worthy. I thought that the author did a brilliant job with this, simultaneously stunning me with the descriptions of the scenery, keeping me busy trying to guess who the bad guys are, and still including well placed time outs to allow the three men to work on their relationship. This complete change of setting and situation also allowed for Matthew to find his confidence and recognize his self worth in a way that worked for his character.
For any fans of m/m/m who have yet to read this series, I absolutely recommend checking out these books. All three are of the high quality I’ve come to expect from Sloan Parker. And in case any fans out there missed it, there are another two books (The Haven series) that are separate but related to this series.
