For over a century, Edward Youngblood has been the logical one in a family of temperamental magical beings. But reason has not made him immune to passion, and Edward’s passion for Mullins, the family’s demon instructor, has only grown.
Mullins was lured into hell through desperation—and a fatal mistake. He’s done his best to hang onto his soul in the twisted realm of the underworld, and serving the Youngblood family when summoned has been his only joy. Edward concocts a plan to spring Mullins by collecting a series of items to perform an ancient ritual—an idea that terrifies Mullins. He can’t bear the thought of losing Edward and his brothers to a dangerous quest.
But every item in their collection is an adventure in brotherhood and magic, and as Mullins watches from the sidelines, he becomes more and more hopeful that they will succeed. When the time comes for Mullins to join the mission, can he find enough faith and hope to redeem himself and allow himself happiness in the arms of a man who would literally go to hell and back—and beyond—to have Mullins by his side?
REVIEW:
Ok, so im probably going to blubber all over this review, because holy shitballs, I’m in book hangover heaven right now. And it’s not going away anytime soon. First of all, this is another one of those books I’ve would give more than 5 stars to if I could. I’d give it like freaking 20 or something. Also, I saw Amy share this somewhere so I’m going to pass along some info. I’m not trying to give spoilers but this is a bit of one so beware. If you guys have not read the Green’s Hill series, I STRONGLY suggest you do. Like really strongly. One, because it’s freaking amazeballs, but also, because those characters heavily intertwine with this series and will later on. You don’t have to, but if you do, it will help you grasp these guys a lot better and why they are the way they are and so on. Also, if you have not read book 1, don’t read this one. Read book 1, Familiar Angel, first.
I had a hint at the Green’s Hill from Amy, but I hadn’t realized how much I missed them until I read this book. It was like coming home. Edward, Francis and everyone have made this series spectacular and Green and the crew have just made it that much more. If you’ve read book 1, you know that was Harry’s story. Now it’s Edward’s turn. You will also find out a lot of info about Francis and kind of why he is the way he is, but that’s more for a later date. Needless to say, it was enlightening.
For Edward, though, he’s been in love with Mullins for years. Since he, Harry and Francis were boys. When Leonard became human, Mullins would help him and Emma teaching the boys things. Edward always felt a sense of peace, a settling with Mullins and the feelings only grew. For years, Edward has been collecting items for the spell to free Mullins as Leonard was. And so they could be together. Just as Edward almost had them all, they were blow up in the minivan trying to escape things. So he’s had to start over and because some things are no longer in existence, they’ve had to reword things to work for the spell. Which has sent them on some harrowing adventures. One where several major discoveries were found and exposed and one that has left Harry almost for dead. They now need help from other sources that they just learned existed and have opened a whole new world to them. And one where they all desperately need to be for various reasons. But Mullins has been struggling with fear and doubt. Not necessarily in Edward but if it’s going to be able to happen for him. When so much seems to be riding against them. But Edward is not going to give up, even when he has to face hell itself to fix it.
These boys have just been in my heart since book 1. The complex personalities of EVERYONE, is unbelievable. Everyone is different, obviously, but they all have these special quirks or things that is just them, ya know? I felt bad for Edward. Hell, I felt bad for all of them, because they have all been through their own special hells. For Harry, he doesn’t know when to stop. He’s the strength of the brothers. But he’s also the one that constantly getting hurt because he takes his body too far or is getting shot up or something. Amd because Harry seems like a natural leader, Edward has quite often felt second best. So he’s been doubting himself. Doubting whether he can save Mullins or do what needs to be done. But what Edward had to have pointed out, is that he has his own gifts that are just as good. It doesn’t make Harry the leader. It makes them a team. So it was hard to see Edward struggle so much. But then Edward knows what it’s really like to lose. They all do, but Edward even more. And because of that he knows he has to get Mullins.
Mullins was having a hard time too. Even when he got to see the boys, or just Edward, they really couldn’t touch, or they had to be careful because he was technically a demon. And wording is powerful. He watched these boys, his boys, his own boy, grow up into such strong men. He wanted to hope, but the bowels of hell despair at him. If it wasn’t for Leonard and the boys, he would have gone insane years ago. But memories keep resurfacing as well. Reasons for why he is a demon in the first place. The wrong that was done to him, the mistakes he had made. So he was having a hard time hoping. But for Edward, he would try.
While this story is for Edward and Mullins, mainly, no adventure for one brother happens without the others, no matter how much Edward tried to exclude them. So we see more of Harry and Suriel, and more of Beltane and Francis and the story with two. Amd for Francis, he would stay a cat mostly forever if he could instead of facing his fears. But it’s time for him too. And it’s not going to be easy.
The cast of characters in this book are like coming home. No lie. ALL of these guys become a part of your heart and never leave. If you don’t love them, I will be shocked lol. But then again, not everything is for everybody. But I do encourage you guys strongly to read this series. And Green’s Hill. And let them wrap you like the warm blanket they are.
