BLURB:
Dinner, drinks, and dancing sounds like a fun night out, but not to Phil. His ideal way to spend a Friday evening is on the couch with his dog and some take out. When he finds himself away from home on his first night out in months, he gets more than he bargained for in the attention of a handsome stranger. He doesn’t usually entertain these kinds of pickups, but when he winds up saying yes instead of his usual no, he ends up with more than the guy’s phone number.
Breaking a long hiatus with a night on the town was what Shige thought he needed, but he wound up with so much more. He’s attracted to the one guy in the club who looked like he doesn’t want to be there, he can’t leave him alone. He wants more from their encounter than what he usually gets. But will fate, and his dangerous secret, let someone like him, have what even he won’t admit he craves?
REVIEW:
Phil is a nurse getting over being dumped. His best friend Jerome encourages him to go on a night out. There he meets Shige, a man who is so affable, Phil abandons all his usual do’s and don’ts to be with him. Their initial meetings were intense, especially since lust is a high priority and money seemed to be no object to Shige, who wines and dines Phil in style. When Phil learned that Shige was only in town for business, he didn’t expect their relationship to go anywhere. Phil had to see Shige one more time, and that was possibly his mistake. Attempted murder, forces Phil into Shige’s safekeeping. Then things happen which turn Phil’s life upside down.
As a child, Phil had empathic powers. He could sense different types of feelings in others. Though, they disappeared during his parents’ divorce. With Shige and subsequent events, they came back with a vengeance, prominently coming to the fore during Phil’s incarceration at Shige’s estate. Shige maintains that Phil’s captivity is for his protection. Phil doesn’t agree.
In the beginning, Shige’s need for Phil, is more for hunger with a base attraction. While Phil is his ‘guest’ lust still rules, combined with an obligation to his safety. Then, the more Shige learns about Phil and his empathy; there is another change to their relationship. Though whether love is in their future, I suspect will be continued into book 2.
During his stay at Shige’s, Phil witnesses’ things that make him believe everyone is delusional. However, there is no unseeing some things, which makes Phil believe vampires could exist. Though he fights the revelations for a long time. It was a factor I liked about the story.
Told in the third person past tense, I found Nasu easy to read. While it has drama, it doesn’t overwhelm the senses. Technically isn’t great, with quite a few spelling and sentence issues. Given that Nasu was published a while ago I was surprised to see them. There was also an element thrown in at the end that gave me a WTF moment, hoping it gets explained in Enrai.
Overall, Nasu didn’t blow me away, or give my heart palpations. But, as I don’t often read this genre, I found it a nice change to my literary habits and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
