A Stars from Peril Novel
For a singer and a spy, love might be mission impossible.
Jaxon Powers has what most only dream of. Fame. Fortune. Gold records and Grammy awards. Lavish hotel suites and an endless parade of eager bedmates. He’s adored all over the world—even in the remote, repressive country of Vasnytsia, where the tyrannical dictator is a big fan. The State Department hopes a performance might improve US relations with a dangerous enemy. But it means Jaxon’s going in alone… with one exception.
Secret agent Reid Stanfill has a covert agenda with global ramifications. Duty means everything to him, even when it involves protecting a jaded rock star. Jaxon and Reid’s mutual attraction is dangerous under Vasnytsia’s harsh laws—and matters get even worse when they’re trapped inside the borders. Romance will have to wait… assuming they make it out alive.
REVIEW:
I’ve said it before, but there were many great books that released in October and I’m still getting around to reading all of them. Kim Fielding is a must read for me so I was excited to see what she had to offer in the Dreamspun Desires series. The book tells the story of Jaxon Powers, a famous musician who is living life large, but maybe in the end a bit of a lonely existence. He is asked by the US government to perform for the leader of Vasnytsia, a country that suppresses it’s people. Reid Stanfill has been assigned to be Jaxon’s assistant on the trip, but there’s more to the story as they reach the country and events unfold. Their attraction quickly develops but they must fight with and against their feeling across a backdrop of a tyrannical regime.
Much of Fielding’s greatest works are set in the American West, so it was a pleasant change to change the setting. I like books that help me learn, and this book made me appreciate the freedoms we have and that there are entire countries in the world that are suppressed from some of the simple things we take for granted. Fielding does a wonderful job painting the country of Vasnytsia and how its people survive and even flourish in such a repressive environment. There is a much growth in both characters as they navigate their feelings towards each other, with Reid opening up his heart and Jaxon becoming more aware of the true world around him. Their relationship is sweet as it’s set against the darker forces. This is a nice combination story of travel, musicians, and spy adventure. My only complaint is that its was on the shorter side and I would have loved to get to know the other characters a bit more. Still, this is a fun read and a wonderful adventure tale.
This is billed as the first in a series called Stars from Peril and I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the series.
