Henri’s stalker has left him with a paradoxical legacy: his mind rebels at the thought of being touched—the very thing his body craves.
For three years Henri has fought to overcome the horrors of the past. Now on the other side of the world—after leaving Australia for Canada—Henri’s nemesis is hunting him with maniacal focus. Trying to escape, he meets Birch, a kind horse trainer, who’s confounded by Henri’s idiosyncrasies even as he is drawn to him. But when Birch discovers the truth, he encourages Henri not to just survive, but to live.
Maybe even to love.
REVIEW:
Holy shitballs, this is one hell of a book! I LOVE thrillers! And this was definitely a thrillers. It also was a very psychological book. Having read it, I want to point out, it speaks of torture, capture, and mind games. The main character goes through hell. He is stalked, beaten, and various other things. One thing he was not, was raped. But if any of the rest bothers you in any way, please be careful. I don’t want anyone triggered. Having said that, DAAAAAAMMMMMNNNN! This book was soooooo good. It was excellently written, and I love the diverseness of the characters too. It takes you on a ride. You never quite know who can be trusted and if the moment the bad guy has come is there or not. Very much a cat and mouse game.
The first time Birch lays eyes on Henri, he thinks he’s gorgeous. However, Henri is in too much of a state of panic for this to be a pickup. Henri is trying to use the phone but his panic is too much. As Birch helps him speak to his friend, he is quickly immersed in a world he wants no part of. But he has no choice. The man who has made Henri’s life a living hell has his eyes on Birch to find out where Henri is. He’s now involved, no matter how much he wishes he wasn’t. Over the next few weeks, time is spent either holed up or on the run trying to get away from this guy. But he seems to be one step ahead. They just hope someone gets to him before he gets to Birch and Henri.
Henri has been through absolute hell. His stalker did things to Henri physically and mentally that there’s really no coming back from. He’s scarred body and mind. But he longs to be free and have someone be able to touch him, hold him, anything. He lost everything because of this guy. And now he never knows when his stalker is going to strike again.
I tell you, I am one of those somewhat paranoid people anyway, but the thought of going through what Henri did makes me want to search through everything and frisk every person I come across lol. And the way technology is nowadays , it makes me even more paranoid. So I can just imagine a grain of what Henri is dealing and has dealt with. It’s scary. And feeling like the NSA or those guys are spying on you…..uh uh.
Then you have poor Birch. All he was trying to do was help Henri. And he ended up in the ride of his life. Almost for his life. And with all that Henri has been through, which Birch does fully know for a while, Birch is trying to deal with Henri’s mood swings on top of it. Which are severe. When he does find out, he can’t blame Henri a bit. But it’s still a lot to take in. Even more so, when the guy is taking it out on him to get to Henri. It’s a lot to deal with.
One hell of a book. I don’t want to go into much more because I don’t want to give anything away. If this is the kind of stuff, though, that this author writes, I will be reading more from her for sure. I hope you all love it too.
