The camping trip from hell may be the first stop on the road to happily ever after in Rough Terrain, the final audiobook in Annabeth Albert’s critically acclaimed, fan-favorite Out of Uniform series.
Navy SEAL Renzo Bianchi has a soft spot for Canaan Finley, and not only because the man makes a mean smoothie. He’s the first guy to get Renzo’s motor revving in a long time. But when he agrees to Canaan’s insane charade – one all-access fake boyfriend, coming right up – he never expects more than a fling.
Creating a hot Italian SEAL boyfriend to save face seemed like a good idea…until his friends called Canaan’s bluff. Now, he’s setting off into the woods with the very man who inspired his deception, and Canaan is not the outdoorsy type. The sparks are already flying when a flash flood separates them from their group, leaving Renzo and Canaan very much trapped…very much alone in the wilderness.
Working together to come up with a plan for survival is sexier than either of them expects. But back in the real world, being a couple is bringing its own set of hazards….
REVIEW:
Rough Terrain was another hit in this series, and the fake boyfriend trope had me swooning. Well if I was prone to swooning that is. I did have a huge grin on my face when I realised where things were going. And yes, I am very guilty of picking this book up without reading the blurb – but come on it’s the Out of Uniform series, so what else was I going to do? Not read it ? Not a chance. So going into this book I was a bit clueless – and I don’t regret a thing.
Canaan Finley has a type, and Navy SEALs does it for him big time. And working in a smoothie shop at the base pretty much guarantees he gets his fill of eye candy every day. At the top of his drooling list is Renzo Bianchi, the star in many of his fantasies – most of them dirty. When his former band mates asks to come along camping with them, and to bring the boyfriend they all believe he has, Canaan realises he has some fast thinking to do.
Renzo Bianchi is not looking forward to a few days off. He does not do well twiddling his thumbs and nothing really to do. So when the cute bartender offers him trouble he is unable to resist. Only the trouble he’s getting is a bit more than he bargained for.
Something that I really, really loved was that Renzo was so surprisingly vulnerable. You all know that I don’t like picture perfect, can’t stand it. So when we got to learn about Renzos insecurities and fears and hang-ups I fell for him – and hard. And the way Canaan handled it all was equally beautiful. They built each other up and became stronger together.
Canaan and Renzo really worked as a couple. They had chemistry – practically dripping from Boudreaux’s every word, there was passion. But more important they had fun, they listened to each other, respected each other. Both of them needed the other.
Perfection thy name is Greg Boudreaux. Again, if I was prone to swooning, his voice alone would probably get me there. Once again Boudreaux delivered a flawless narration. He portrayed both Renzo and Canaan just right, he captured their personalities and their feelings shone through every word. He held me captive in their world and made me feel what they felt. And if that’s not what a great narration is all about I don’t know what is.
I think I’ve read somewhere that Rough Terrain is the last book in this series. And what a nice and sweet ending at that. It’s truly been a wonderfully cuddly series and I’ve looked forward to read or listen to them all.
