Happy New Year! It’s still early enough to say that right? Well, hope you’re all having one anyhow. 2019 is going to be a challenging year, but you’ve got to start with your chin up otherwise you’ll be in the doldrums by February.
Anyhow, I spent my Christmas vacation branding myself like a Texas steer! I’ve redone my website and updated it actually use my name–free pro-tip for you, apparently that’s a good way to help people find out. I’ve also themed the heck out of my facebook and twitter, and started to actually use my Facebook Page instead of occasionally giving it a suspicious poke from a distance.
Basically my slightly previous New Year’s Resolution was to be better at social media and front facing part of author-ship.
The funny thing is that actual front-facing stuff–meeting people, doing cons, talking about stuff–I’m pretty good at! I am a bit shy, but I like people and I enjoy talking to them. Oh, and if you give me a microphone you can forget about it. The sound of my own voice is music to my ears! Kidding (mostly!).
Hardly anyone else can understand me, as we learned at GRL, but I’ll never let that stop me.
Social media on the other hand kind of flummoxes me. I never feel like I have anything significant enough, funny enough, clever enough to say. The idea that people would want to hear my daily, passing thoughts on things is hard to believe. So you think ‘I’ll see if something more interesting happens tomorrow’, but now you have set the bar higher and after another silent day it seems harder to break the silence the next.
Next thing you know it’s been a week(s) since you posted and people think you might be dead.
I am going to try and improve this year though. I will post, even if it is just a random picture of a really cute dog I saw down the street. There shall be video content, commentary, and frankly my American followers are going to learn more about the ins-and-outs of Emmerdale than any of them really want.
Although, frankly, they should be grateful. I tried to introduce Rhys Ford to Hollyoaks once and she was just so confused. The words ‘why’ and ‘who’ got mentioned a lot.
At least it’s going to be a busy few months! I’ll have plenty to blog about. I’m going to be at Shimmer in February, then we have a Reader’s Meet in London on 14 March with me, Rhys Ford, C.S. Poe, and Bru Baker all at the St. Pancras hotel, Paris on the 15-18 March, and a wee holiday in the Cotswolds after that. So that should keep my social media topped up for a while!
After that…well, hopefully I’ll have gotten into the swing of it by then. That’s the key to any New Year’s Resolution, getting some momentum going before the New Year buzz wears off.

The excellent part about you’re love of face-to-face is that after GRL, I can totally hear your voice in my head as I read this. ANd this time, I understood every word! Hugs!
