It’s no secret cosplayer Felipe Suero is looking for his happily ever after—in his love life as well as his career. He’s getting his degree so he can quit his miserable job and start his own costume business. Now he just needs to land the sexiest silver fox to ever attend a con.
Trask Briscoe’s life revolves around staying clean and sober, running the Magick Den, and attending local cons. His rules haven’t left much room for romance. But he can’t deny Felipe has caught his complete attention. He’s just not sure what he can offer a man so full of joy and sass.
When Trask finally accepts Felipe’s offer for a cup of coffee, he soon finds himself on a second date and a third. Between cosplay projects and roleplaying games, they discover a deeper connection than either of them expected. And Trask realizes that sometimes rules are made to be broken.
Now Felipe just has to convince his family—and Trask—that Trask has more love to offer than he ever dreamed.
REVIEW:
Well, if you are in the mood for a book that goes “full geek,” do I have the book for you.
A Whole Latte Sass, the second in Marguerite Labbe‘s Geek Life Series, is all the geekery of book one, squared. You got the cosplaying Felipe Suero just shining in his many themed costumes, and Trask Briscoe, whose life basically revolves around cons and his gaming shop, making sure that all those crazy role-playing gamers don’t go underrepresented. If you are looking for geek…don’t look any further. It’s all here. It’s all queer. And it is going to sass you socks off.
It is also a tiny bit exhausting at times. Especially for people who are not into this particular brand of geekdom. I can’t fault it, exactly. It is nice to have some of this crazy culture come to life on page in such a vibrant way. But man, if you are not dialed into this kinda stuff, it might be a bit much. I am a geek, sure, but role-playing has never been my thing, and while I greatly admire cosplayers–especially the ones that go full-tilt on their costumes–it is not something that I spend all the much time thinking about. This is also a long book, that really takes it time with the relationship as well. So, what I’m saying is, that while I really did enjoy the writing, the characters, even the setting…if you find yourself not particularly caught by the brand of geek shown on this page it might get a bit tiresome in places. There were enough side elements to keep me interested in finding out what happens next–and god help me, but those adorable puppies were worth the price of admission–but when it got going on extolling the virtues of some bits of Trask’s and Felipe’s love of all things geek I could feel myself checking out mentally.
But like I said, there are some really great things about the other parts of the story. Trask and Felipe have some great chemistry, and I won’t deny that the age-gap between them is totally my thing. And while I did find the choice to randomly give Theo his own pov section despite the rest of the book up to that point being solely focused on Trask and Felipe’s povs a bit odd, I did like getting a little more about the main characters from the first book.
All in all, I found this to be a good book. Your tolerance for all things geek might be the ultimate judge on this one for you, though. For myself I found enough outside that part of the story to keep me invested in the characters and story till the end.
Also…those goddamn dogs. I’m not even a dog person and I wanted to snuggle the ever-living-bits out of them whenever they came on page.
