Zig Reid-Harris has everything an eleven-year-old girl could ever want: a great home, two fantastic fathers named Deacon Reid and Lang Harris, and all the books she could possible read.
When a school assignment about holiday traditions unexpectedly broadsides her, she discovers burying the past isn’t as easy as it looks, and the stark reality of her life before her adoption sinks in. Ashamed of the bleakness and poverty she came from, Zig struggles with the assignment until an epiphany strikes the whole family—it’s time to start their own traditions.
Zig and her fathers plunge into the insanity of holiday joy, exploring everything the season has to offer and learning how precious family truly is along the way.
REVIEW:
I fell in love with Zig in Fish Stick Fridays and I was so happy to see that there was going to be another story with her. She’s truly a diamond in the rough, just like Deacon, but boy do they have beautiful souls and heart. They love something fiercely. Something that shines through every interaction. The first few pages of this book had me teary eyed from all the love, and set the tone for the rest of the book.
Deacon and Zig might have had a hellish beginning in life, but they sure ended up in the right place, with the right people – the right cats. Now they just have to figure out the details. One such detail is traditions. A school project about Christmas memories and traditions se is the start for this family to try it all. From cutting down Christmas trees and making gingerbread houses out of graham crackers and icing, to baking ornaments and cakes. They weren’t only finding new traditions, but realising others as well, and the importance of them.
I loved this novella so much. It was packed with Christmas spirit, love and family. It was all a holiday story should be and more and I’m lucky I had the privilege to read and review it. And can I just say that it is so fitting that this book is being released on a Friday as the tradition of Fish Stick Fridays still lives on in the Reid-Harris family.
