Knitting has become a very popular topic. My author friends knit, my publisher friends knit, my reader friends knit – it seems that everyone these days likes to pick up some yarn and turn it into something wonderful. Recently, my sister has taken up the cause, making hats and scarves for my nieces. She says it’s very relaxing, and I could use some relaxing, so I decided—what the hell? I’ll play along.
So, on their way to my house as I write this are a loom (because I’m not coordinated enough for needles), yarn, and a book so I’ll have a clue what I can do with said loom. According to the table of contents, I should be able to knit a fully-functioning space shuttle.
I got yarn which changes color throughout the bundle? Across its 280 yards? I’m not sure how you’d describe that. Just one of the things I’ll be learning, I suppose. Well, that and “worsted weight” and “3/8 gauge” and whatever all these numbers mean.
What kinds of things do you guys like to knit? What’s been your biggest success? Your biggest disaster?
Let’s talk knitting!
I’m one of the many knitters! I like it as a creative activity that’s more manual and less fraught than writing. It takes brain power, but a different kind of brain power than writing … I think.
Luckily I have a sister who likes wearing beanies, and a mother who’s always too cold, so there’s always someone who’ll at least pretend to be grateful for the results. For myself, I hate wearing wool, and I am always too hot, so I like making myself tops or cardigans in cotton or linen yarn. I hope you enjoy your knitting experiments!
If I end up not being able to make anything but hats and scarves, I’ll just donate them somewhere. LOL
You may decide that you like to crochet because, somehow, the one hook is easier to manipulate than two knitting needles. For professional looking finished product, I prefer knitting but for me, something to do with my hands while I ponder, or not, crochet is an easier activity.
In my old high school yearbook from a time long ago, in a distant world, there is a picture of one of my friends, sitting on the floor, likely waiting for the late bus, wearing a 6 ft scarf that I knit, yes knit, for her using variegated yarn.
I’m using one hook and a loom – that could be what I’m doing. I have no idea. LOL
I both knit and crochet – I like the feeling of making something and it is very relaxing. I take my knitting to book club because I don’t sit well without something in my hands. Unlike some other crafts, it’s easily portable which makes it possible to be social while knitting. I love the community that has developed around my local yarn shop. I’ve even found some other fans of m/m romance in my knitting groups, who we’ve brought into our m/m romance book club.
Amy Lane takes hers to conferences where she’s sitting and listening to speakers. It looks really relaxing.
