Eduardo “Lucky” Morales is a fighter, from his childhood days in Cuba to his time as a Special Forces Green Beret. Scarred by the wars of his past, Lucky has learned nothing lasts forever. Guarding his heart is second nature, and getting emotionally involved is not an option. As co-owner of Four Kings Security, Lucky works hard alongside his former brothers-in-arms and fellow Kings, but he also plays hard. Flirting with sexy Texas cowboy and detective, Mason Cooper, is too much fun to resist, until Mason turns the tables on him.
Mason Cooper may not be a soldier, but he’s fought his share of battles as an openly gay cop and now a detective for Major Crimes. Mason has no idea when things changed between him and Lucky, but the gorgeous, fiery Cuban has turned his world upside down. When a mistake leads to his suspension from the force, Mason turns to the least likely person for help: Ward Kingston.
Determined to keep Mason at arms’ length, Lucky is surprised to find the man at Four Kings Security. The Florida nights might be getting cooler, but the heat between Lucky and Mason burns hotter with every passing moment. Working private security can be dangerous and unpredictable, but so can falling in love.
You definitely want to read the previous two books in this series before jumping into this one. Lucky was introduced from the get go, as he is one of the Four Kings. He isn’t as memorable of a character as some of the others, at least for me, but I’ve been wanting his story even more so because of that. I remember him as the sexy accented member of the bunch whose motorcycle Ace had a habit of “borrowing.” Lucky has been flirting on and off with police officer Mason, but it all came to a head at the end of the previous book when things blew up between the two. We weren’t privy to the details, but with Ace riding off by himself into the sunset, we were left craving the details. This book picks up about two months after that evening.
These are two fairly complex individuals. They each have pasts that have shaped their current behavior and thoughts on relationships. Everything happens for a reason, and when Mason is put on leave at work for failing a random drug test (after forgetting to mention the cough medicine he took with codeine), he turns to the Kings, and more specifically King himself, for a job to keep him busy in the meantime. King, who seems to know what’s going on with all of his guys in one way or another, decides to put Mason and Ace together on the job. Turns out, it was just what they needed. It doesn’t take long for their chemistry to explode.
While Ace seems like a bit of a flirty goofball who isn’t serious about anything, he is all business when it comes to work. Their trust in each other grew, their chemistry was on fire, and it didn’t take long for the romance to set in. They each had issues to overcome, but with that growing trust, they were able to confront them together and move past them.
This was yet another solid and enjoyable story in this series. I have to say that I’ve been looking forward to the Big Kahuna’s book from the get go, and it looks like King’s book will be the icing on the cake. I love all of these guys, but he is the glue that holds them all together and he really needs someone to knock him off his feet. I can’t wait for the next book to see how it all plays out!
