Tis the season to be jolly, but romance writer Matt Darcy is feeling anything but festive. With a pile of rejection letters as high as his latest manuscript, Matt is questioning whether his career as an author will ever take off. And while his perfect husband Cal has planned a week-long trip to a mountain chalet for Matt, Mrs. Mulroney, Mr. Banks, Tilly and Angus—so that everyone can be together and enjoy the lead-up to Christmas—Matt can only hope his feelings of worthlessness and self-doubt won’t ruin the trip.
But when a bump on the head knocks Matt out and he wakes up miles from the chalet, the journey he must undertake is not a trek through the snow, but an eye-opening insight into the lives of those he loves most if he, Matt Darcy, had never, ever existed.
Will Matt let his feelings of uselessness and self-doubt lead him forever into the Forest of Darkness… or will this Christmas open his eyes to the magical truth that it is indeed a wonderful life?
REVIEW:
This series actually makes me laugh out loud!
Matt is back from his crazy wedding and Cal is taking him and the rest of the gang up to a wonderful chalet in Vermont for a Christmas week getaway. However Matt’s rejection letters for his novel are piling up taller than the actual manuscript and he is feeling every bit the failure that he believes that he is. Matt’s feelings are beginning to worry Cal and Cal tries his hardest to convince his husband that it doesn’t matter. What matters is that they have found each other and then Matt says “I could just disappear and nobody would ever know.” When Cal tries his hardest to explain “Matt, listen to me. You’re not a story that nobody’s read. You’re an amazing, beautiful human being who cannot simply disappear. God, I wish you could see that. I wish you could see yourself the way I do. I wish you could feel all the joy that comes from you. I wish you could hear all the kind and wise and funny things you say. I wish you could experience all the love you have to give.” At that moment a snow flake drops on Cal’s glove and life changes in an instant…Matt gets to experience what life would have been for all those that he loves if he had never existed!
This very amusing Christmas novella does exactly what I wish for in a series. It catches us up on what all is happening in the character’s lives. And, if you are quick enough, you can catch the theme in the last three words of the blurb. Yes it’s a Billionaire’s Wonderful Life.
I know that it is tough to feel sorry for a gorgeous man who has caught and married not only the love of his life but also “The World’s Most Eligible Bachelor”! I mean Cal is an amazing man and head over heals over Matt. His only fault is that he just wants him to be happy and can that really be considered a fault??? Yes, he might have been a bit dense that he has the “Midas Touch” when it comes to business and he wasn’t as understanding to the feelings of failure that Matt was experiencing. Those feelings are actually compounded by Cal’s success. So, yeah, Matt is feeling like he isn’t an equal partner in their relationship but, even if he was the most successful writer/author in the world he probably would be an equal financially, but he is the perfect partner, he has that in spades, and Cal just needs to be able to convince him of that and that the money thing is a non-issue as long as they have each other.
I must say, I laughed so hard when I was reading the opening scene that I had to have my hubby stop his show to hear it. He wound up laughing as hard as I did. Geoffrey Knight has this way with the characters in this series in making them so real and believable. I have enjoyed this series immensely and can’t wait for the next chapter in Matt and Cal’s lives.
