Leaving his enormous family behind, native New Yorker, Elijah, decides to move to Brighton Pier for a fresh start. Being part of a large LGBTQ community and landing his dream job at Inkubus, a local tattoo shop, is too big of a draw for him to turn down. But just when he thinks his new life is going perfectly, he finds out his burgeoning relationship is nothing more than a friends-with-benefits arrangement to the man he was swiftly falling for. Suddenly, everything that felt so right to him feels all wrong, and he wonders if New York, with his family, is where he is meant to be after all.
Jake has worked hard for the life he’s made for himself in Brighton Pier. His life as a bachelor is pretty set in stone. Running his own business and spending time with his family and friends is enough for him, or so he’s convinced himself. Though he’s met a man he cares for, he’s adamant about keeping his single life as is. He has his reasons for not wanting to commit to the beautiful man he’s irrevocably drawn to. He just hopes their friends-with-benefits arrangement will be enough to keep Eli in his life.
When tragedy strikes, and Jake’s world is turned upside down, his instincts lead him to lean on the one person who’s become someone special, despite his best efforts to try and push him away. Eli—unable to turn Jake away when a loss so great takes the strong man to his knees—steps selflessly into the void in Jake’s life, regardless of the toll it takes on him. As both men struggle to deal with their own emotional turmoil, their lives veering off course, they grow inevitably closer as the days pass. But even so, they are still left wondering—can two people, drawn together by tragedy, turn a devastating situation into a fresh start? Or is it too late for a new beginning?
REVIEW:
I had to walk away from this book and review for a bit. Before I could really sit down and write it, I was trying to gather my thoughts. But after a book like this, it’s very hard. This book was incredibly written, but the emotional entanglement…. involvement. Geez. I hope you read this book, and if you do and don’t feel what these characters feel and go through, you need to check yourself, because you are stone. Dear heaven I am STILL reeling from this book hours later.
I don’t want to give anything away but there is a huge tragedy in this book. Before this happens, Eli is about to walk away. He’s thinking about it, at least. He’s so crazy about Jake and wants so much more than to be a convenient booty call, but Jake has made it clear he wants nothing more than friends with benefits. And Eli’s heart can’t take it. You can’t help but feel for Eli, yet you want to shake him. He keeps going back to having sex with Jake even though he keeps saying to himself he won’t. The heart can be a pain in the ass, right? But tragedy does strike and hard, and Jake realizes he needs Eli just so he can breathe. Eli is there for him. His heart won’t let him be otherwise, and things seem to be getting better. But Eli is fearful he’s just being used until the grief is over. Jake has to set him straight and to do so, he has to finally admit just maybe he wants more with Eli himself.
I don’t want to get to explicit, like I said. Can’t give the book away. But there are a few characters in this book that just melt my heart. When you read, you will see. And if you don’t, go get checked. Eli and Jake break me too. This whole story did. But it’s so good. Both of these guys have some serious realizations come to them. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes something bad to make you see things you didn’t see before. Throughout this book, there were many times I wanted to smack them both lol. They are hard headed. But other times I just wanted to hug them both. *Sigh* I just don’t even know what to say. There is so much I want to tell you about this book but I don’t want to spoil it. Eli and Jake have a hell of a lot they have to endure. A hell of a lot. But even with the tragedy, there’s hope. There’s a chance for a new start. To move on. No, you don’t ever forget, but you learn how to cope and still be happy.
Maybe that’s the best I can describe it. I don’t know. I just know, you need to read this. It’s one hell of a book and my heart is still pouring. The writing is incredible and the characters are…..damn. Just read.
