REVIEW:
Chris Anducci has finally been placed in the Sheriff’s Office after years on jail duty. His first assignment isn’t exactly things dreams are made of!
Chris has been assigned protection duty for Pavle Kasun a young man who is the main witness against a human trafficking ring. Pavle managed to escape after being held captive and sold for four years. Pavle was conned into going to America to start a new life after his parents died because in Serbia you are ostracized if you are gay. Once Pavle is ensconced within Chris’s house it takes him quite a while to overcome his mistrust of people to start trusting Chris isn’t going to hurt or abuse him.
Luckily Chris isn’t alone in safeguarding Pavle; first port of call is his nana who came from Serbia way back when so she is able to talk to Pavle in his language which is an immense help, Pavle’s social worker Marie Briggs who will do just about anything to make sure Pavle has the opportunity to lead a happy life, other deputies who pull together to support both Chris and Pavle. It turns out that Pavle adores Chris’s nana and is a whizz with flowers, he becomes inundated with people wanting him to create colourful gardens for them, but he must get the trial, his citizenship and his green card before he can do any of them.
The road to their HEA is not by any means a straight forward or easy route! Just trying to stay alive takes all their efforts!! Chris try’s far too hard to make sure Pavle wants to stay because he ‘wants’ to stay, not because he feels obligated to. Pavle wants to make sure Chris is in love with him not just feeling sorry for him. Although the topic “human trafficking” of this story is anathema to most people although in no way detracts from the beautiful love story between Pavle and Chris because you get to witness the rebirth of a gentle but resilient soul in Pavle.
