BLURB:
When a ghostly dandy and his roguish companion try their hand at matchmaking, things definitely go bump in the night.
For centuries, foppish Captain Cornelius Sheridan and brooding John Rookwood have haunted the mansion they duelled and died for. Now these phantom foes must join forces to save both their home and their feuding descendents.
But when Captain Sheridan sacrifices his afterlife for the sake of true love, will Rookwood risk everything to keep his companion by his side, or is it too late to say “I love you”?
REVIEW:
I’ve been a fan of both books in this series so far, though it’s hard to call it a series because all of the books are so different. The first was historical, the second modern, and this one is a ghost story. It’s also, unfortunately, the weakest link so far.
I really enjoyed the set-up. Rookwood and Sheridan—a rogue and a dandy—are stuck together for eternity after killing each other in a dual, and they’re trapped in mutual pining as they watch their descendants bicker in their old home. They decide to play a little matchmaker for their niece and nephew, and along the way, come to their senses about their feelings for each other.
Since all of the other books in the “Captivating Captains” series have been full-length novels, I was surprised by the short length for this one. The story seems so involved and full of character detail that making it a short story is just cutting out the good stuff. John and Sheridan have awesome, bickering chemistry, and Dan and Jen are adorable, but there’s just no time to get to know them before they get their happily ever after.
It’s a fun addition to a great series, but not the stand-out so far. I really wish it was a novel-length work. The odd-couple love story between Rookwood and his captain deserves many more pages!
