Fouled mouthed, snarky and overly pessimistic, Cecil Baxter’s rules for life are to trust no one and to never become attached. Since birth, his life has been one pitfall after another. But when freedom was a fingertip away, Sin, a sophisticated man with a vocabulary to match, jumped in his path. Thrown into a world he doesn’t understand, Cecil finds himself breaking all his rules just for a chance to be with Sin.
Sin Draven, leader of the Draven Zaytari, knows he has quirks. Many would see him as an overly calm, civilized individual. However, people often forget that almost everyone has darkness inside them and Sin is no exception. When approached by a hurt young man his honor demanded he help, thief or not. That instance leads to Sin finding the one thing he has always wanted—a home.
When outside forces, misunderstandings, and inner turmoil pulls them apart, they must fight their fears before all is lost.
Trigger warning: Book touches on topics such as self-harm, suicide, and depression.
REVIEW:
This is such a good addition to this series. I really loved it, except for the cliffhanger. So not happy with that. I hope book 4 comes soon. Other than that, if you’ve been keeping up with this series you will love this one.
I don’t know if I had a dry eye through this whole book. It pulls at you so much. Cecil has been through so much hell. His mother is gone, he feels so abandoned and alone, his father abuses him severely, and everyone treats him like trash. His only little friend is a magical little being that he creates. But it doesn’t have real feelings or anything so he feels even more alone. And reading what he has lived through and what he’s going through and about to get thrown into, I sobbed like a baby. This poor sweet soul. He can’t trust anyone. People have failed him so many times. But he’s old enough to run, and run he does. But his old tricks fail him when he meets Sin. Sin figures out what he’s up to and his injuries have finally gotten the best of him.
In comes Sin. Heart-throb extraordinaire with dark looks and fangs to match. Lawd have mercy, he’s definitely one you want to throw down on the bed. Heehee. But with Sin being able to sense things, he knew Cecil was in a bad way. And he wants to help so bad. He does all he can but it never seems enough. Cecil won’t let his guard down. And can you blame him? Sin finally finds out why himself and oh is he not happy. Oh to be a vampire who can kick ass. I’d ‘take care’ of a few people myself. But Sin has secrets of his own and I don’t know who to feel bad for more.
These two will just heartbreak you. But amaze you as well. They fight daily to be better than their circumstances. The problem is the circumstances won’t let up. And it’s so sad to see these precious souls who have been so battered try not to hope that someone will be good to them and love them. Especially Cecil. I love their strength, even in severe sadness. They hold on. They fight. They hope. Even if just a smidgen. They are beautiful people.
I think what helped make this book for me was the ‘minor’ characters as well. Benji, Roth, Jekyll and Hyde (and yes that’s their real names) were just the best. Snarky, major attitude, but soft when it counts. They are loyal forever and just people you want to be around. And I adore them all.
I really really hope there’s a book 4 coming SOON. LOL. Please. Cliffhangers drive me crazy but they work. Makes me want more. Most of the time. And this time I do. Especially with how this one left off. If you guys haven’t read this series, you should. Its a good one.
