When your present starts to look a lot like your past, and there is only one way to ever be free of it…
Sean
After telling me that he’s a vampire on the run from a vampire hunter, basically out of nowhere, Jules is once again running away. This time he’s hoping to find a way to be free of the hunter for good, while keeping us safe at the same time.
But he doesn’t know that we’re not safe here either, and with Liam in the hospital, I have no idea how I can protect anyone anymore…
Jules
I can’t believe that my twin brother Tyler is here, that he’s been following me, trying to find me, for as long as I’ve been running away. I thought that he was safely at home, but he’s been in danger the whole time.
And as I’m trying to find a way to definitively get rid of the hunter, my past crashes into my present when I find out that the hunter has taken Tyler, again…
With Sean’s help, I need to find Tyler and get rid of that hunter for good, or we’ll never have a happy future together…
This is the third and final short novel about vampire Jules and human Sean in the The Vampire’s Past series. It takes place in a world with all sorts of creatures, vampires, werewolves, mages and, of course, humans, but there are also hunters, trying to rid the world of the un-humans.
REVIEW:
In the third and, I think, final part of the series, things really heat up.
Jules and Sean continue to dance around each other. With Tyler gone, Jules’ worst nightmares are coming true and he refuses to involve Sean, until his new friends—a motley and exciting cast of characters we’re introduced to for the first time—help him realise how much Sean is already involved.
In “traditional” vampire stories there is a section where the heroes train and kit up for the final assault on the vampire castle/stronghold. In a very nice twist, our friends team up humans, vampires and other not-quite-humans for a final assault on the hunter. There were times when Eye of the Tiger was playing in my head, not in a bad way.
If I have a criticism of this one, it’s that I don’t feel enough time was given to fully develop each of the new characters. There was such a lot going on in this novel that it felt crowded. As we’ve been briefly introduced to Zoey in the last book it might have been nice, perhaps to have found out a bit more about her back then and maybe even have a brief introduction to her situation, or friends.
That being said, it’s not a huge thing because all the new characters are unique enough to be instantly recognizable, and they all have unique voices. My favourite was Kai, the mage. He’s like no mage I’ve ever met before and I would love to see more of him, perhaps in a book of his own? I’d like to know more of his story.
I’m glad that the repetition at the start of each chapter has lessened, perhaps because there’s so much more going on. There’s a definite sense, right from the start, of the story driving forward to an inevitable conclusion.
The fight with the hunter is explosive and imaginative. I especially like how Sean’s experience is documented. It takes us on a journey along with him.
Like any real fight there are casualties, and nothing comes easy, but in the end Jules and Sean are together and that’s all that matters.
It’s hard to know what else to say without giving away major spoilers, which would be sad because there is so much going on and so many subtle twists. This is not a book that should be read casually. You’re going to need to set aside time to sit down and read.
I can’t honestly say that any of these three books are future classics, but they are well written, flow smoothly and have engaging plots and characters. They’re a good read, somewhere between fluffy and angsty with a good helping of romance.
