When you achieve a goal, do you reward yourself? I never used to. I used to think the achievement itself was enough. But then I met my partner and he’s a great believer in rewards. You did the laundry? You deserve cake. You went to the dentist? You can buy that new book. You got through an awful meeting at work? Here’s a beer. No, wait, let’s open that nice bottle of wine.
Isn’t it great? It’s a double-whammy of awesome, because not only do you have the satisfaction of knowing you did the job, you also get the treat.
Writing a story is hardly the same as going to the dentist, but it is work, even if it’s magical work. So, my partner’s delightful rewards system carries over to writing (yay!). To celebrate the release of my short story A Spell for Master Vervain in the Teacher’s Pet 2 anthology, I decided to reward myself with art. But not just any art. I wanted character art of Master Vervain himself, because that way I get to share my vision of him with readers.
First, so you know who he is, here’s a bit about the story. It features:
- An apprentice magician who has always done the reading
- His clever, sarcastic, red-eyed master (that’s Vervain)
- Lustful pining
- Eye-watering embarrassment
- A happy ending (of course).
So, here he is, folks. In all his clever, sarcastic brilliance—the slightly terrifying (and very hot) guild-master—Vervain:

I love the look in his eye. It’s clear he has a sense of humour, but he’ll take no shit from anyone. If you were in his history of magic class, I bet you’d do the reading. God, I know I would. The art’s by the talented Vic (http://bloodwrit.tumblr.com/) who was a dream to work with.
And now you’ll have to excuse me. I need to go and write another story so I can reward myself with another art commission…

Lee Welch lives on a hill in the windiest city in the world – Wellington, New Zealand. She mainly writes stories about magicians falling in love; her most recent book was Salt Magic, Skin Magic. She likes crumbling mansions, cavernous libraries and most things with tentacles. She studied ancient history at Auckland University and creative writing at Birkbeck, University of London.
