What can you do when your past doesn’t just show up when you don’t want it to, but it seems out to bring you down once and for all…
Sean
It’s only been a few weeks since Jules moved into my place. Everything seemed to be going well until he freaked out as we were leaving a gay club.
Someone is after him. I don’t know who, but it scares him a lot and I need to guard him from more pain, I can’t see him get hurt again.
And why did Jules’ older brother talk to me but he doesn’t want Jules to know about it?
Jules
Just as I thought that I may have escaped my problems, the vampire hunter who nearly killed me seven years ago shows up at the club I’m at with Sean. Now I’m in a scramble to protect not just myself but also Sean, because I can’t let him get harmed.
When my old housemate shows up at the college after classes, all hell breaks loose and I realise there is so much more at stake than I knew before…
This is the second short novel about vampire Jules and human Sean in the The Vampire’s Past series. It takes place in a world of all sorts of creatures, vampires, werewolves, mages and, of course, humans, but there are also hunters, trying to rid the world of the un-humans.
REVIEW:
Jules and Sean are now mates, and things are heating up – both with their relationship and the hunt. The hunter is getting closer and Jules is afraid he’s going to have to run again. The situation is further complicated by a man who tells Sean he’s Jules’ brother, Rowan. If he had told Jules, Jules could have informed him that Rowan was actually the vampire who died to save his life, and not his brother at all.
The mystery man provides both tension and moments of sweetness, a genuine warmth towards Jules that adds to Sean’s certainty that he must be family to Jules. When the two eventually come face to face, the answer was obvious, but touching and beautifully handled.
There were some annoying parts early in the book, where there was a lot of repetition. I did find myself a little frustrated until the story got back into its swing. The tension ratchetted up pretty quickly and there was more than enough to get my teeth into. It was also a little annoying that Sean and Jules’ pov’s slightly overlap at the beginning of each chapter. They are only slight annoyances though and I certainly don’t feel they detract from the story.
Two minor characters we met in the last book, Liam and Jace, who are donors, reappear and have a bigger part to play. I love these two, maybe even more than Jules and Sean sometimes. They’re not in love but omg they so are. Beautiful characterization and so many things said without being said.
By the end of the book we’ve essentially gone from two MC’s to five. This brings in some new flavour, also some new tensions and fears. There is a lovely part when they all have a fun evening together, which is kind of poignant because it makes Jules see all he misses when he keeps running without putting down any roots.
Jules finally comes clean to Sean about being a vampire, and that’s the beginning of everything going completely to hell. There is one heck of a twist at the end that bodes well for an explosion of action in the next book.
