When cop-turned-vampire-hunter Vance is sent to eliminate a bloodsucker from the Louisiana swamps, he figures it’s just another day at the office.
But he has no idea what he’s getting into.
Clay is no ordinary vampire, and the spark he lights in battle-scarred Vance is anything but average. Clay should be the enemy, but Vance is powerless to fight something that feels so right… and so damn good. In Clay’s expert hands, Vance might realize he’s misjudged vampires and that donating a little blood can be sexy as hell.
Clay might even ride to the rescue and save his new love when Vance’s mission goes south and Vance becomes the hunted instead of the hunter. Along with his human familiar, a crazy Cajun named Remy, and the enigmatic older vampire Gryphon, Clay must get to Vance before it’s too late. Then they can find the man who betrayed Vance and take their revenge.
But faced with lies and motives darker than they ever imagined, they’ll have to wade through blood and fight their way to a happily ever after….
REVIEW:
Clay is a man who has no idea how badly he’s been damaged until it’s shown to him. Vance is just the vampire to help him figure it out.
BA Tortuga is one of my favorite writers in this genre and this book doesn’t let me down.
The premise caught my eye. I loved the idea of a hunter who sees the error of his ways when he gets to know his prey. The glimpses we get inside of Clay’s head reveal a man who does his job because it gets him paid but he really has no love of what he does.
Vance is everything a vampire should be. Sexy and dangerous, full of passion and when you mess with what’s his, you’re gonna get the fangs.
The setting for the story is wonderful. For me, down in the bayou is the perfect place for Clay and Vance to get to know each other better. Remy is a sweetheart, with a steel spine, willing to do whatever he has to so he can take care of the people he cares about. I love his “you gotta do what you gotta do” attitude. But he’s sweet in funny ways and I can almost hear his Cajun accent in my head.
Gryphon is another character that I had no trouble picturing. His age leaves him a little less human than Vance and there’s no trouble seeing that the farther a vampire comes from his making, the less he will bother to fit into societies constraints.
I loved the snark and banter thrown back and forth by the characters as they sniped and teased at each other. It made me wish I could actually hear them because it would have made me smile.
I totally got swept up in the story and once I got started, I couldn’t put it down until it was done. Not the first time I saw 3 am at the end of a story and won’t be the last but it was totally worth it. I love a good supernatural story and this one definitely gets all the details right. It’s a little bloody, really angsty and sweeter than it has a right to be.
