A Cole McGinnis Mystery
Former LAPD detective Cole McGinnis’s life nearly ended the day his police partner and best friend Ben Pirelli emptied his service weapon into Cole and his then-lover, Rick. Since Ben turned his gun on himself, Cole thought he’d never find out why Ben tried to destroy him.
Years later, Cole has stitched himself back together. Now a private investigator and in love with Jae-Min Kim, a Korean-American photographer he met on a previous case, Cole’s life is back on track – until he discovers Jeff Rollins, a disgraced cop and his first partner, has resurfaced and appears to be working on the wrong side of the law.
As much as Cole’s fought to put the past behind him, he’s soon tangled up in a web of lies, violence, and death. Jeff Rollins is not only trying to kill Cole’s loved ones, he is also scraping open old wounds and long-forgotten memories of the two men Cole loved and lost. Cole is sure Rollins knows why Ben ruined all their lives, but he isn’t looking for answers. Now Cole is caught in a cat-and-mouse game with a cold-blooded killer with the key to not only his past but his future.
REVIEW:
It’s (almost) the end of an era – if you’re being dramatic that is. Leaving characters that we’ve fallen for so completely is never easy. I do know that it won’t be the last time I see them, because there’s something about this series that makes me come back for more, and so I will again.
In Dirty Heart we get answers. Answers that we’ve been searching for since the beginning of this series. Like an onion, layer by layer the secrets has been slowly unravelling with each book. What really happened that day, and what made Ben do the things he did?
Not only do we get the story behind Ben, but being true to the series there’s also a case, and it all started with Jae’s aunt begging for help. A case where Cole soon finds himself in trouble, just like always. Bullets will fly and there are some suspenseful and scary moments.
But more importantly we get the love between Cole and Jae. It’s stronger than ever and it’s wonderful to see how far they’ve gotten since we first met them in Dirty Kiss. They are solid and everlasting. Just like their friends and family – no matter how insane or quirky.
Once again I can’t do anything but sing, or rather write, Greg Tremblay’s praises. A true master of his craft and it shows in every word he speaks, the characters he portrays and the feelings he evokes in you while listening. Truly one of the great one that I keep coming back to for more.
Dirty Heart is the last book in this series, we’ve gotten our answers and cases have been solved, but more importantly everyone we’ve fallen for since this series began have gotten their happily ever after. What more can a girl as for?
