Jaden King was raised in Boston to a wealthy family that taught him what love and hard work is. He has a challenging and rewarding career until everything was turned upside down. What was once a promising future has quickly become a frightening and unknown reality. After months of dealing with the fall out on his own, he decided getting away–or more realistically, running away–to White Acre and his best friend sounded like the perfect plan.
Danny Keegan is a laid-back man with simple tastes and an even simpler life. He adores the little town of White Acre where he grew up, he loves his parents, and he enjoys his uncomplicated life. He’s always told himself the fact that he’s a closeted gay man in a conservative, parochial town wasn’t an issue and coming out of the closet wasn’t necessary. But with the addition of Jaden in his life he realizes as happy as he is, he could be happier and the future of a love of his own doesn’t seem so out of grasp as it always had.
When Jaden and Danny meet, their chemistry is undeniable but playful flirting doesn’t mean anything. They start spending all their free time together, and what started as a simple friendship quickly turns into something much more than either saw coming. But, Jaden carries a secret that could end it all before it even begins. And though Jaden is scared to tell the truth and risk everything that has come to mean so much to him, he knows that he can’t go on without laying himself bare, leaving Danny with an important, life changing choice to make. His content little life or what could be the love of his life.
Will Jaden’s truth be too much for Danny, or will Danny decide a life out in the open, full of love, laughter, and passion is worth risking it all?
Jaden had just walked back into the guest room at Mac’s house with a towel wrapped around his waist after taking a shower when his cell chimed.
Wear sneakers.
That sounded ominous. Jaden didn’t even own sneakers. Well, not sneakers like Danny would expect. His were more for style than durability.
He wondered what Danny had planned if he needed sneakers because it clearly wasn’t an SoR marathon. Jaden knew he most likely wouldn’t get an answer if he asked, so he just texted back a pouty face emoji. Danny’s reply was the laughing emoji which didn’t clear up one single thing.
Jaden was laughing at his reply when Bennett’s voice cut in. “What are you laughing at?”
Jaden’s head snapped to the left, not expecting anyone else to be in the room he was staying in, and saw Bennett leaning against the door frame, arms crossed, and a smile on his face.
“Tsk, tsk. You should knock, my dear. It’s only polite before you walk into someone’s room.”
“You are correct, and I would have had you closed the door.” Bennett chuckled in reply.
“Oh, well, my fault then. No harm done.” Jaden opened the closet door to grab some clothes, searching for something to go with sneakers.
“What are you up to today?” Bennett asked.
Jaden looked around the closet door blocking Bennett from Jaden’s view to find him leaning against the dresser on the other side of the room. “Apparently, buying sneakers.”
“Buying sneakers?” Bennett’s tilted head showed his confusion.
“Yes, an adventure for me, I’m sure, but enough about me. Why are you all dressed up today?” Bennett was wearing a dark blue suit making his pale skin and blue eyes stand out even more than usual.
“I have my first interview today. It’s with a smaller company than I was hoping for, but they have a good reputation.”
“Reputation means more than size,” Jaden replied, standing behind the closet door getting dressed. “That goes for guys, as well,” he said, winking at Bennett as he stepped out from behind the door fully dressed in dark jeans and a vintage T-shirt he was sure Bennett had bought for him.
“All right, since you are being all secretive about what you’re actually doing today, I’m going to leave you alone.” Bennett was smiling, and he knew Jaden would tell him the full story when he was ready to.
“A boy is allowed to have his secrets.”
An hour later, Jaden pulled into Danny’s driveway, happy to note he made it there for the first time with no GPS help, thank you very much.
Carrying his brand-new sneakers, he headed for Danny’s front door. Jaden had just raised his hand to knock when the door opened with Danny on the other side, sadly, fully dressed.
“Tsk, tsk, Danny. I thought we agreed wet and naked was the way you should be answering the door?”
Morningstar Ashley is a transplant from the Yankee-controlled territory of New York, and now finds herself in the heartland of cowboys and longhorns—Texas. Armed with her imagination, wit, and trusty sidekicks in the form of her two crazy kids, devoted dorky husband, big lap dog, and rambunctious cats, Morningstar spends her time reading the books she loves, crafting her own characters, and arguing the merits of hot chocolate over the bitter brew known as coffee. (Hot chocolate wins, FYI.)
After a lifetime of trying to get people to realize her first name wasn’t Ashley, Morningstar decided the best way to settle the debate was to put her name on a book cover. Now she find the accomplishment of publishing so satisfying her mind won’t stop creating stories of love across the spectrum of LGBTQA+.
