A savior lies in the heart of every good man, but sometimes only love can awaken the man inside the savior.
The world’s had it out for San Francisco firefighter Mace Crawford from the moment he was born. Rescued from a horrific home life and dragged through an uncaring foster system, he’s dedicated his life to saving people, including the men he calls his brothers. As second-in-command of their knitted-together clan, Mace guides his younger siblings, helps out at 415 Ink, the family tattoo shop, and most of all, makes sure the brothers don’t discover his darkest secrets.
It’s a lonely life with one big problem—he’s sworn off love, and Rob Claussen, one of 415 Ink’s tattoo artists, has gotten under his skin in the worst way possible.
Mace’s world is too tight, too controlled to let Rob into his life, much less his heart, but the brash Filipino inker is there every time Mace turns around. He can’t let Rob in without shaking the foundations of the life he’s built, but when an evil from his past resurfaces, Mace is forced to choose between protecting his lies and saving the man he’s too scared to love.
REVIEW:
Rhys Ford always comes up with the most interesting characters.
Mace Crawford caught my attention in the first book of this series and I couldn’t wait to read his story. It’s a doozy. The author seems determined to tear my heart out again and again with the 415 Ink gang. It’s one of those rules that when one of the main characters is an ass, the bigger jerk he is, the sadder his story.
Mace has a very sad story. When you read it, I hope you’re as horrified as I was. My favorite part of this whole story was watching Mace evolve as Rob knocked down his defensive walls one by one.
And Rob? Well he’s a sweetheart. All energy and fun but with a really big heart, capable of seeing beyond the outside of people. His determination to make Mace see his worth is beautiful and heartfelt and I feel like we all need more people like him in our lives.
It was good to see Gus and Rey, the guys we fell for in the first 415 Ink story, Rebel. I like to catch up with my favorites and see how their HEA is working out. In fact, I adore the whole 415 family and I can’t wait to read the rest of their stories.
Rhys Ford creates characters that I can connect to and even if I’ve not had the tragedies in my life that has shaped theirs, the author knows how to bring out a reader’s compassion and empathy. I don’t find myself feeling sorry for her characters, but I did find myself supremely angry at the shitty situations they found themselves in.
I love the world the author builds for her characters. She puts them in familiar areas and all of her books seems to belong to the same universe, making the reader feel like they are coming home every time they pick up one of her stories.
I have no problem recommending this story to everyone who loves to get swept away by a story. It’s not always easy to read, but it’s always compelling.
