They’re baaacckk!
When a simple ‘find & fetch’ case throws private investigator Twig Starfig and newly-minted wizard, Quinn Broomsparkle, into the middle of an EBI murder investigation, it’s just another day in the Elder Realm.
If murder were Twig’s only problem, he’d be the luckiest half-dragon in the land. Murder he can handle. Fulfilling his promise to his scheming, power-hungry father to run for a seat on Lighthelm’s city council? Meh, he’d rather face a demon with a toothache.
On top of their case going sideways, and Twig running for a council seat he really doesn’t want, Twig and Quinn are forced to face some unpleasant realities about their budding romance, while still learning how to handle the wizard-familiar bond they now share. Throw in a red fury with abysmal taste in boyfriends, a ghost pirate-parrot who drinks too much, a murderer who will stop at nothing to get what they want, a host of new friends and enemies, and you’ve got a situation where no one is safe and everyone is Fairy Game. *This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone.
REVIEW:
I have to say that there was a lot going on in this book! Don’t get me wrong, it was good but, wow. lol The book starts out with our main characters, Twig and Quinn, being hired to find an artifact and while this may sound straight forward at first, it really isn’t. What they find turns out to be a fake but finding the real deal isn’t as easy as it should be; rival hunters are looking for the same thing and there are multiple attempts on their lives while other people are dropping like flies at the same time. If that wasn’t bad enough, Twig’s father is back in the picture having had several attempts on his life, as well. Plus, Twig’s mom shows up, Quinn is still being pressured to return to the Hominus Realm, and Twig and Quinn are still muddling through their own relationship issues while still working on their clan. ( I wasn’t kidding when I said there was a lot happening here!)
The book itself was well written and the author gets props for the creativity used in not only the world building but in the varied cast of characters, as well. Things and people just fit within the story well without feeling as though it/they were unnecessary and a waste of time to read. Things also seemed to flow a little easier in this book as opposed to the first one and I found myself settling into read it faster and easier than at the start of the series. And while I do think you could read this as a standalone story without much issue, I would still recommend reading the first book for what I consider to be essential background information about the main characters, if nothing else.
Now, despite how much I enjoyed the book, there is an instance that I feel I should warn people about just to be on the safe side. There is an instance in the story that I feel falls in the non-con territory but others may not agree. Drugs are used in order to…hmm…lower inhibitions and it leads to an interlude between Twig and Quinn that I didn’t feel all that comfortable with, especially knowing Quinn’s background from the previous story. Someone else may see it differently than I do but I’m putting it out there so people are aware and informed if that’s something that may be a trigger.
Generally I thought the story was really good and things were left off enough that I’m pretty sure there will be at least one more book to the series, if not more. If you enjoyed the first book or are just looking for a pretty darn good fantasy to read, I’d suggest giving this one a look.
