A warm welcome to author JD Chambers joining us today to talk about new release “Only Love You”, part of the succesful Only Colorado series.
JD talks about Jonathan and brought a giveaway for our readers!
Welcome JD 🙂
Now, as author parents, we aren’t supposed to have favorites. I love all my characters equally, and all that, but I have a soft spot for Jonathan Olson.
The character of Jonathan developed after I got sucked into a You Tube rabbit hole and ended up watching vlogs of Deaf West’s Spring Awakening cast on Broadway. I loved that they not only did a musical, but the way they incorporated sign, hearing actors, and choreography together was incredibly beautiful. My favorite part of the vlog series, however, was when they asked the deaf and hard of hearing actors what other musicals they would like for Deaf West to put on, and the actors couldn’t stop going on and on, listing musicals they loved and would love to be a part of. Because, why the heck not?
Jonathan is the epitome of that attitude. If there’s something he wants, the only thing stopping him is himself. Below is an excerpt from when we are first introduced to Jonathan in the story. I hope you love him as much as I do!
Only Love You is available August 28th.
Blurb:
“It has recently come to my attention that I have turned into something of an oblivious asshole.
In my defense, I didn’t do it on purpose.”
Ben Harrison is not having the best year. It starts out with his sister announcing her engagement to his ex-boyfriend. The revolving door of roommates leaving as they find their happily ever afters doesn’t help. Neither does his knack for making bad decisions.
“I’m going right back to school come fall. I don’t plan on stopping until people are forced to call me Dr. Olson.”
Jonathan Olson is too busy for a relationship. As a deaf graduate school student, he works nonstop to fulfill his dream of being a scientist for the Forest Service. He certainly doesn’t have time to deal with an asshole who treats him like he doesn’t exist.
When a friend suggests that Jonathan pose as Ben’s boyfriend for his sister’s wedding, they both have their reasons for agreeing. But what starts out as a game of pretend between frenemies quickly turns into something meaningful, no matter how hard they try to fight it. But even fake boyfriends can be a challenge for two men who are convinced that they aren’t relationship material.

Rocky Mountain Fun Factory is supposed to be fun. The word is right there in the name. So why the fuck am I not having any? It’s my graduation. My party. And I am not going to let Gigantor of Clan Asshole ruin my good time with his grouchy pout and inability to say one freaking word to me. Not even a “congratulations.”
When Zach, one of several kind friends who suffered through that graduation ceremony and dinner out with my crazy family, asked if he could invite Ben to come along to the Fun Factory part of my party, I said sure. Granted, every time I’ve met Ben he’s been reserved, which is my polite way of saying that he totally ignores me, but I’m a nice guy. It’s a beautiful spring night, and we’re going to have a blast playing putt-putt, go-karts, and laser tag. The more, the merrier. So, I say sure. Why not?
Because he looks at me like I’ve somehow offended his grandmother, killed his dog, and smell like a roadhouse, all at the same time. Now I remember why not.
“Hey Krissy, want to dance?” I sign to my little sister. The arcade is too chaotic to understand anything going on around me. I can usually only hear in one-on-one or very small, quiet group situations, and then only if I have my hearing aids in and the voices are on a deep enough register. Lots of ifs. Thankfully, almost everyone that I’m here with knows at least a little sign language. Everyone except Gigantor.
“I don’t care if it is your graduation day,” she signs back, “You’re going down.”
I laugh out loud, a rarity but it’s so noisy in here no one will notice. Because there is no fucking way I’m going down. My uncle might own a video game store, where granted I have worked in the past, but I’m shit at video games. Except for Dance Dance Revolution.
JD Chambers wanted at various times to be Indiana Jones, Pat Benatar, and Wonder Woman when she grew up. She never considered writing down the stories she crafted in her head. They provided nothing more than entertainment for long drives or sleepless nights, until one particular story insisted it didn’t want to reside only in her noggin. She hasn’t stopped writing since.
JD finds unlikely heroes, humans courageous enough to be themselves, and spreadsheets incredibly sexy — the last one much to her husband’s chagrin. Together, they raise three teenagers and the world’s most mellow Chihuahua on the Oregon Coast.
