Someone has to be responsible.
Micky O’Neill and Dan Peters now live in Wales, bringing up Micky’s disabled little brother away from small-minded Heathwood and close to Micky’s deceased mother’s family.
Things are fine…until Dan begins his dream career as an English teacher at the local school and Micky, main caregiver to Flynn, is isolated in a village that only serves to remind him of his mother’s absence.
With Flynn’s health deteriorating and his needs becoming more complex, everything is tested to its limits and Dan seeks solace in a friendship with a fellow teacher, sending Micky into further turmoil.
After an accusation is leveled against Micky and it seems he’s slipping back into his old ways, he and Dan are torn asunder. To repair the rift, both have to accept responsibility—for life.
REVIEW:
Oh I was so happy to see little Flynn again. He’s such a sweet little boy. But having someone with a disability is hard work and can often take a toll on everything around you. This book shows what it’s like. It’s hard to read but worth it. When you see what has to go into keeping things alive, it’s hard but beautiful in the end, because of the growth involved.
Micky and Dan finally got settled in their new little home near family. But things aren’t as great as they were hoping. Micky can’t really find work with taking care of Flynn and Flynn is having more health problems. Not to mention he keeps running off with the little girl next door and it’s scary. With Dan starting work, maybe it will help. But it doesn’t. Another teacher is trying to get with Dan, Micky is feeling trapped, and everything has just gotten too much. The rift between Dan and Micky seems to grow wider by the minute and Micky is terrified for Flynn. He’d be lost without that little guy. With everything piling against them, it’s hard to see if there’s a way out. Or a way to fix what seems to be broken.
Life seems to love beating the crap out of us when we’re down. Being a parent, you never want anything to go wrong with your child, but when it happens, you try to make the best of it. Micky isn’t even Flynn’s father. Just his brother. But he would do anything for Flynn. The little guy is just so special. But as for anyone, it gets to be too much sometimes. And when you can’t catch a break, it makes it worse. Everyone needs a chance to breathe. I felt so bad for Micky and Dan because they just could not catch a break. Everything kept hitting them from all sides. It broke my heart. Everything was falling apart. No communication whatsoever. And what little there was, was defensive and angry. I don’t know if I could do it. I guess I would. I’d do anything for my kid but damn. But with work and forgiveness, things can turn out better.
Very good book. I recommend this series. If for nothing else, little Flynn. Such a special little guy that will warm your heart.]
