Welcome Morticia 🙂
Rock and/or Roll
If you get the cartoon reference to the post title, bonus points! Anyway, hey all 😊 I’m stopping by today because my novel, Rocked Hard was just released and I’m truly excited to share an exclusive excerpt with you. But first, let me briefly tell you why.
For 20 years, I worked as a singer and musician. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, my dad was a musician and in general—the entertainment industry is in your face there all the time. I’d hit my mid-twenties before I was finally yanked out of my delusional perception that the only music anyone on the planet listened to was from LA, NY or London. My trip to MIDEM in Cannes (A music festival that is the equivalent in importance as the film festival) opened my eyes in the most wonderful way to a banquet of music from all over and the power it holds in erasing political and cultural differences.
To that end, Rocked Hard holds a big place in my heart and was written with my experiences in the industry in mind. Many of my feelings and opinions are included in this novel—as well as the song lyric from my own CD. I was cool and let Aubrey borrow them. But this story is also about the aging, disillusioned alternative rock star Aubrey, and the younger music journalist Bryan who is questioning his sexuality. I poured a lot of emotion into this one, so I hope you enjoy it! This scene is at the end of their first day working on Aubrey’s memoir, and they’re both trying to behave themselves as Aubrey drives Bryan back to his hotel:
They were almost at Bryan’s hotel and Aubrey was gripping the steering wheel so hard, he was afraid he’d destroy his fingers. That would suck for rehearsal next week. He held in a snort. Who gives a fuck about rehearsal when Bryan is right next to me where he’s been all day, his adorable round ass pressed into the leather of the seat, his masculine scent highlighted by whatever the hell that soap is he’s used that’s making me insane with want…
He growled.
Behave yourself. Professional. You’re being professional. You’re professional with the most excruciating boner of your life.
“Are you still upset about that asshat? If I’d known, I would’ve gotten you away from him before he’d had the chance to bother you anymore.”
Bryan’s concerned tone, his protectiveness, only made Aubrey crazier. When Bryan had grabbed him back at the Rainbow, had wrapped his hands around his shoulders to keep him from landing flat on his face, Aubrey had wanted to fall back against his frame and be wrapped in his embrace. The heat where they’d touched had been like a furnace.
“Him? No, not worth it.” Aubrey cleared his throat. “But that’s very sweet of you.”
Aubrey could’ve sworn Bryan had made a small choking sound.
“Uh, yeah, just…” Bryan shifted in his seat. “If I can help in the future, let me know.”
Aubrey grinned. “Ooh, I have an idea. We could have hand signals. Or maybe a code. Like, if I say, ‘Lawrence Welk used to shred it on guitar’, that means get me the fuck away from these hangers-on. Or, if I say ‘Did you hear the president is planning a nude photo spread?’ it means I’m turning down a dinner invitation. Whaddya think?”
Bryan broke into a laugh, an almost musical sound that wasn’t helping to temper Aubrey’s erection any.
“Makes perfect sense. I’ll keep those in mind.”
“Thank you, Bryan. You’re my superhero. I can’t think of anyone else I’d want watching out for me.” Aubrey swallowed. Easy, there. He’d been unable to keep himself from not flirting altogether, but he might have hit Bryan’s suggestive comments quota for the day.
When Bryan didn’t respond but went back to staring out of the passenger-side window, Aubrey wished he could kick himself. As he made a left turn, Bryan’s hotel loomed ahead. I couldn’t keep my big mouth shut a little while longer so we could’ve ended on a high note, now could I?
Aubrey pulled up to the front, shaking his head and giving the death glare to the valet about to approach them. Just a few more minutes.
“Well, here you are, Bry.” Aubrey angled his body to face Bryan, praying he wouldn’t simply bolt without another word.
To his relief, Bryan turned to regard him with a smile. “I think today went really well, that we’re off to a great start. Are you pleased with how things went?”
Don’t. Just don’t. “Very.” Anything more and he’d be spouting double entendres right and left.
Bryan arched his eyebrows as if surprised—or perhaps disappointed—that Aubrey hadn’t elaborated.
“Uh, excellent.” Bryan fumbled with the seatbelt, struggling to get it unlatched while Aubrey struggled not to help. “So, same time tomorrow, or do you have other things you need to do?”
Aubrey licked his lips. The only thing he wanted to do was Bryan. “Same time is perfect. I’ll put in a request to the car service for you. Or…” This time when he licked his lips, he was certain Bryan had tracked the motion. “I could pick you up?”
“Whatever’s more convenient for you, Aubrey.”
Stalling had been Aubrey’s intent by making small talk, but he could swear Bryan was on board with it too. “I’ll come by around one. Should I—?”
“I’ll meet you down here.”
Bryan’s expression seemed pained and Aubrey tried not to get too bummed out at his blurt.
“Sure. Till then.”
Bryan smiled, yet it seemed sad somehow. “Yeah, till then.”
He grabbed the door handle to leave, but Aubrey shoved the to-go box from the Rainbow at him.
“Here! You might want a snack later.”
Bryan stared at the box containing the leftover fruit and cheese. When he peered up at him, Aubrey was surprised by his frown. “You barely ate anything, Aubrey. I’m worried about you.”
Aubrey snapped his jaw shut the moment he realized it had dropped open. “I was too self-conscious, that’s all. I haven’t hung out in that place for years, haven’t been out in the clubs or Hollywood for close to a decade. I wasn’t sure which would be worse—that no one noticed or that everyone noticed.”
With a sigh, Bryan nodded. “I wondered. Jesus, Aubrey, I wish you’d said something. We could’ve gone somewhere else, I don’t want you to be upset.”
God, so fucking sweet. “No, it was totally fine. We were doing a tour down memory lane and it did jog some memories.” Aubrey chuckled. “Even if some were rather putrid.”
Bryan pushed the box back at him and their fingers touched. They both froze, the moment not lasting more than a few seconds yet long enough to jack Aubrey’s arousal into high gear, his breath hitching as he swallowed hard.
Bryan let go. “Uh, you…you should keep this.” He kept his gaze averted. “Promise me you’ll have more once you get home, you’ve barely eaten anything today.”
Something that went beyond desire warmed Aubrey, filled him to the brim with a happiness that hadn’t been a part of his world in a very long time.
He cares.
Can the touch of a rock god last forever?
Legendary alt rock singer, Aubrey King, is making a comeback after many years out of the spotlight. Rumors of his sexuality have always dogged him, and while he’s never come out publicly, his reasons for leaving the industry had nothing to do with his fear of discovery. What matters to him is the music. That’s his truth, and so far, his only real love. He aches to find someone to share his life with, but his propensity to fall fast and hard—along with chasing men he knows can never be his—has left him all alone.
Rock journalist Bryan Gallagher was first turned on to rock music at the age of twelve when he became obsessed with Aubrey’s band, Falling in Stereo. His friends, and even girlfriends, would sometimes tease him that he was hot for Aubrey. But it was all about the music and nothing else—at least that’s what he’s always told himself. When he’s approached about helping Aubrey write his memoir, it’s not only a dream assignment, but an exciting opportunity to work closely with his idol.
When Bryan meets Aubrey, the electric heat between them is unnerving. He’s further confused by how intense Aubrey’s attraction toward him is and how deeply they connect over their shared obsession of music. While Bryan struggles with uncertainty regarding his own sexuality, he also has to navigate through the perils of working with a lover and keeping their relationship a secret.
But Bryan’s biggest struggle of all might be determining whether declarations of true love from a rock star can ever be trusted.

If there happens to be some friendly bondage or floggings involved, she doesn’t begrudge her characters whatever their filthy little hearts desire. Even though she’s been crafting her naughty tales for more years than she’d like to share—her adventures as a published author began in 2011. Since then, she’s been fortunate enough to have several books on bestseller lists along with titles receiving recognition in the Rainbow Book Awards, Divine Magazine and Love Romance Café.
Once upon a time she was the lead singer in an indie rock band that toured the West Coast and charted on U.S. college radio. She currently resides on the North Oregon coast and when she’s not fantasizing about hot men, she takes walks along the ocean and annoys the local Karaoke bar patrons.
