Oliver and Samuel’s relationship is fairy-tale perfect. They share a gorgeous house in Antwerp, go out with their friends every weekend, and count down the days to their dream wedding. But their happy ending is shattered one late night, and just like that, Ollie is left bereft and alone.
The months that follow are long and dark, but slowly Ollie emerges from his grief. He even braves the waters of online dating, though deep down he doesn’t believe he can find that connection again. He doesn’t think to look for love right in front of him: his bisexual friend Thomas, the gentle giant with a kind heart and sad eyes who’s wanted him all along.
When Thomas suddenly discovers he has a son who needs him, he’s ill prepared. Ollie opens up his house—Sam’s house—and lets them in. Ollie doesn’t know what scares him more: the responsibility of caring for a baby, or the way Thomas is steadily winning his heart. It will take all the courage he has to discover whether or not fairy tales can happen for real.
REVIEW:
What. A. Book. It’s so good, but bring tissues because it hits you hard right out of the gate. The emotion…gah. It’s so incredibly REAL. I laughed, definitely cried, and didn’t want the book to end.
Ollie was so in love with Sam. Everything has been picture perfect since they were kids and discovering each other. On the night of Sam’s first gallery opening, tragedy struck and Ollie’s world was taken away. Grief overwhelmed him to the point he almost gave up. But little by little he started to come back to life. He started seeing things he never noticed before, and learned things about his friends he never knew. He tried the online dating scene once, at the suggestion of a friend and just when things seemed to be going well, grief and guilt overwhelmed him. But he starts to see that one of his closest friends has looked at him as more than a friend for years. It’s awakened something in him he thought lost. But the brakes get put on hold when Thomas finds out one of his flings ended up with him being a father. Ollie opens the doors to his home to help Thomas and opens his heart to a sweet little blue eyed boy and his daddy. But with this new development and Ollie’s past, it may be too much for all to bear.
If you’ve ever lost someone who was like your next breath to you, you know it’s hard to even breathe again. The overwhelming grief and the question why just circles and circles in your head and heart. You don’t know if you can ever get up again, much less move on. But in time, it gets a little easier. Ollie had my heart from the get go. Sometimes he seemed a little self-absorbed to me, but when I got to thinking more about it….it’s not that he is or that he’s selfish.his whole world was wrapped up in Sam. From morning till night and all the hours in between. To overcome that takes such strength. To be able to move on, takes even more. And so much courage. I just loved Ollie. He realized so many things in and out of his grief, and it changed who he was a bit. Not that he was a bad person. He just finally saw the world around him more. When Thomas needed his help, he didn’t hesitate. As much as I loved Ollie, I cried for Thomas. He’s loved Ollie for so long. He’s tried to move on. But again, when someone is your whole world……. These two had such a hard time. More than most. So much to overcome. It’s never easy. Life is damn hard. But when something is worth it, you have to keep going.
I’m still reeling over this book. Major book hangover. But worth every minute. Pick this book up. Just pick up tissues while you’re at it. 😉
