REVIEW:
Love Hurt Repeat is the second of a series of novels involving Kell and Damian. In this instalment, they start off separated for the summer. They miss each other, but with contact slowly becoming less, doubts about their relationships longevity sets in. When Damian sees a picture of Kell kissing someone else – his fears are further reinforced.
The prime characters in this story are somewhat at odds with each other. They love each other, but both have different coping mechanisms. Daniel is a bottle it up until the cork blows guy but craves contact. Kell uses avoidance tactics.
Told in the first person. Love, Hurt, Repeat brings to the fore the need in each relationship to have proper communication. The lack of it causes their need for each other to be somewhat caustic. Outwardly, they react as they always did. Underneath it though their internal musings are different – they know something is wrong, but fear tackling the problem. Communication goes awry when one expects actions of the other that don’t happen. No one is a mind reader and fissures can’t be mended when one doesn’t know what the problem is.
Regardless of what has happened, they love each other, but with inner fears not being voiced it is a guessing game of how to make the other happy. They go overboard with actions while walking on eggshells. The boys live together. Damien feels safer when Kell is in his sights and goes into overprotective mode. As Kell loves Damien, he lets him effectively separate him from the outside world. Life isn’t helped by the fact that Damien has an addiction to energy drinks.
I would say that Damien did this and Kell did that, and initially, I was firmly in the Damien camp, but as the story progresses, they are so in love that they are as bad as each other. On the one hand, they are the other’s saviour, alternatively, they are the other’s worst nightmare.
As the title says – Love, Hurt, Repeat. This instalment is all about the hurt, and its many forms. The story demonstrates that loving someone can also be the worst form of hurt – albeit there are some influencing outside factors. I found this novel an interesting read, not quite like anything I’d read before. While I was pleased that my emotions got a workout, I found it frustrating that the two had such a destructive influence on each other. Butttt, that’s all part of the journey, and I’m guessing Damien and Kell didn’t have the age, perspective, or experience to deal with what life threw at them.
Love, Hurt, Repeat is not quite a series with standalone episodes – this is the second of a run involving the same leading men – therefore, expect to be left with a hook to buy the next one. Thus, if you are a reader who likes everything wrapped up and solved – I’d pop this on the watch-to-buy list ready for when the series is complete.
