Jack and Eli have been separated for months while Jack gathers intelligence in Philadelphia and Eli spies on British officers in New York. When Jack has to take on the role of spymaster and work behind-the-scenes, Eli offers to insinuate himself in Philadelphia’s loyalist circles, taking Jack’s place.
As Eli works to uncover traitorous negotiations between a high-ranking American officer and the British, he cozies up to British spymaster John Andre. Jack doesn’t like Eli putting himself at risk, nor does he like seeing him fawning over a beautiful, charming man.
As the chances of the American army surviving the winter decline, tensions mount between Jack and Eli, threatening to tear them apart. They will have to rely on their love and trust for one another to make it through these harrowing months.
REVIEW:
I have really enjoyed this series and this book. I have a hard time with historical books so often because there isn’t enough research and things are off. But this was researched and you could tell. It has so much to offer too. War, betrayals, spies. It’s a great read through every page.
Jack and Eli have been separated for months because of this war. With the new promotion Jack has it’s moved him to Philadelphia from New York and everything seems to be worse. The British seem to be closing in at every turn. The rebels are dying off due to cold, diseases, and lack of food. Jack is doing all he can but it never seems to be enough. And not having Eli at his side makes for even more miserable of a day. But Eli and Constance have wormed their way to Philadelphia now and the pressure is hard. Jack wants to love Eli in every way but he’s terrified of being caught and them losing their lives. But Eli is having none of it. As they secretly rekindle their relationship, stakes are getting higher. The new spy sent in on the British side knows more than he’s letting on. Eli is trying to learn information through charm and flirting and just when he thinks he’s succeeded the tables are turned on him. Jack thinks the worst, so not only was Eli in danger of his life, Jack has called him a traitor without listening. Constance finally got through to Jack, but it may not be in time. And their relationship may not recover.
Things back in the 1700s were harsh. Not saying they aren’t for people now, but sodomy then was punishable by death. I know in some place it still is, and that makes me so sad. But anyway. Jack is terrified. He’s already lost one lover that he couldn’t even grieve over. Eli has come to mean more to him than anyone, but it’s so hard for Jack to let go and just be with Eli. No matter how much he loves him. To makes matter worse, there are new players in this war and players shifting sides and it’s uncertain who to trust anymore. I wanted to reach through this book and smack Jack. When Eli was in trouble, Jack acted without thinking. And what little he was thinking, he was thinking through jealousy. I mean I know Eli is a flirt, but he has told Jack over and over there is no one else but him. And has shown him that. He’s shown Jack his love constantly. Another one of those instances where fear and jealousy cause harm instead of good. And it drives me crazy when men think they have to be ‘manly’. I mean in the don’t show emotion amd never express your feelings type of way. Ah men. Lol. Some women are just as bad.
This was another book I couldn’t put down. I really enjoyed it. Great characters and great plot. I encourage you guys to pick this series up. Make sure you read book 1 first though. Or you will be missing some things😉
