REVIEW:
Josh Lanyon writes really good mysteries, we all know that, and Murder Takes the High Road is not an exception. I had a great time listening to this book and it shows why I keep coming back for more.
Carter Matheson is going on the trip of his life time, a mystery tour hosted by his favourite author, Following in the steps of some of his favourite novels he tours the Scottish Highlands, but it’s not long until mysterious things starts to happening. Add in his ex-boyfriend hanging on him just a little too much and things are getting a bit tense in the group.
It takes a lot for a book to surprise me nowadays, but Lanyon did just that with this one. There were a few things that I did not see coming and I can ask for nothing more in my mysteries. I won’t talk much about the mystery plot as I don’t want to spoil the fun for you. I’ll just leave you with it was a good one and that you shouldn’t miss out on it.
As for the romance… well… I kind of wished that was left out of this book. I just didn’t believe in it. It didn’t add anything for me, it was a nuisance really and I kept wanting them to get back to solving the mystery. I never felt any connection between Carter and John whatsoever, and a lot of the time it felt like Lanyon was forcing them together. Then there was all the x-boyfriend drama which was just OTT and too much, it felt mostly like adding drama for dramas sake, and that’s usually something I’d like to avoid.
Gary Furlong has been a bit of a hit or miss with me in the past, to the point where I had to stop listening a few minutes in. This book however I happily listened to. While not perfect there was nothing off putting either, just a matter of personal preferences. He has a great voice and pacing for narration and listening to him was very enjoyable. My only wish – and this is my own preferences – is that he would differentiate more between the voices. But I also freely admit that I will take one natural and pleasant sounding voice over several unnatural and forced ones any day of the week. So in the end I would definitely recommend listening to this book.
I loved the mystery of this book and Furlong was a great choice for narrating it. So if you are looking for a mystery to sink your teeth into this is the book for you. Not so much on the romance department though,
