Every action has consequences.
For a decade, Angel Salvatore has been the most powerful sorcerer and only necromancer in all the Northeast. Never one to ask permission nor apologies, he has acted with near impunity for years.
Until now.
The High Council of Sorcery has come to Boston, and Angel is their target. Charged with numerous violations of practitioner laws, his freedom and family are placed in jeopardy.
If found guilty, Angel’s apprentice Daniel will be imprisoned to serve out the remaining years of his apprenticeship. Isaac, his brother, is too vulnerable to be left unguarded, and Angel fears for his sanity and health. And Simeon, Elder vampire and Angel’s mate, refuses to see Angel convicted under the laws of the Council and his actions to keep Angel free threaten to start a war that could destroy their world. And Angel faces the severest of punishments—the castration of his gifts.
The Council has never cared for the people of Boston, and Angel doubts their motives. They have come for some insidious reason, and it has nothing to do with upholding the law and everything to do with Angel.
Dealing with an impending trial, a wayward ghost, and a graverobbing ring of thieves leaves Angel on the edge. He thinks he may have a handle on things until violence erupts across the city, and a stranger comes to town…a stranger with his own dark powers of necromancy.
REVIEW:
Hold hell I loved this book. I honestly didn’t know it was part of a series until right before I started reading and I’m glad it could be read like a standalone. However, it would probably be better to read the other two first. Just little points of info that spring up here and there. Plus, I really want to read what I’ve missed and can NOT wait until the next one comes out.
Angel has a lot on his plate. It’s time to ‘rescue’ his brother again from his drunken binge and really get him help. On top of things, now the absent Council has decided to make their presence known again and they are coming at him with charges. He quickly figures out why they have, or some of them have, come after him. It’s all about power and greed. He is one of the most powerful sorcerers in the world. And being a necromancer gives him even more power. It doesn’t hurt matters that he is also soul bound to his mate, an extremely powerful vampire. What makes him beyond pissed, though, is they are trying to come at him through his apprentice, and Daniel has been hurt enough. He refuses to let anyone hurt him again. While dealing with these assholes, and his brother, he still has to figure out who else is in on this grave robbing stuff and get rid of monsters who never stop killing. A sorcerer’s work is never done. And for the idiots who have come after him and his in his city, they are in for a rude awakening.
I swear I think every ‘good guy’ in this book, I loved. Angel is so powerful. But at his heart, his is nothing but mush. He doesn’t let anything go to his head. Although he would have every right. He’s confident in himself and what he can do and will do anything for those he loves. His mate, Simeon, seems like a cold, cold vampire to most. But just like Angel, he cares deeply for those under his care. He guards them with his life. Especially Angel. And I adore his hellhound, Shadow. I want him. So bad. You can’t ever leave out Eroch. A tiny little dragon who is larger than life. So many think he is cute and adorable, but many mistake him for it. He has a secret. And I laughed with evil Glee when I read what it was. I’m not going to list everyone, because there’s many. But the one that touched my heart the most, was Daniel. Sweet, shy Daniel. His is the story I hope is in the first two books that I missed. But there’s enough here in this book to kind of piece it together and it broke my heart. He has been through so much in his short life and it seems to come at him in all directions. He feels like he is a weakling because he hasn’t come into his powers yet and because of all that has happened to him, he shuts down with fear is some situations. But what is great about him is that he is so strong and still so sweet with a heart of gold despite all that was done to him. He stands firm when his knees are shaking and that’s courage. I’m really hoping to see more of him and someone else lol. He needs some good love from more than a friend. Someone to show him goodness and love and intimacy.
I recommend this so much. The characters alone make this book awesome, but there is action, betrayals, and so much happening that keeps you going from front to back.
