A warm welcome to author Tia Fielding joining us today to talk about new release “Like Breathing”.
Plot Bunnies and Where They Come From
I don’t even know how many times I’ve had someone ask me “Where do you get your ideas from?” At first, for a long time, I said that I don’t know. In the last couple of years I’ve always answered “Where don’t I get ideas from?!”
Let me explain by telling you about few separate plot bunnies that have hopped into my brain.
Last November, I was in England with my sister, our niece, and a friend. While there’, everything felt like it could be part of this or that story. My mind kept spinning meetings at the Castle Park when one guy almost collided with the other on his bike, or maybe their dog got loose and the other guy managed to catch him? There were tattoo artists looking at street art and meeting the graffiti artist, and there were busy waiters and the regular guy who felt he never got noticed before that one magical night.
When we went to Bath after Bristol, and I stepped inside The Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul (also know as The Abbey) my brain immediately conjured a shy boy leading tours in the cathedral like church and a visitor who saw the boy’s beauty when it seemed like nobody else would.
On the train from Bath to Brighton, I watched the scenery go by and dreamed up a farmer and a guy who buys a house next to his, interrupting his daily life somehow, because let’s face it, the scenery was gorgeous and nothing if not awe-inspiring.
In Brighton, one of my favorite places on earth, I came up with the idea of taking a certain narrow alley and converting it into something suitable for a possible book series, because I love Brighton, and want to write something set in Europe again—I’ve only done that with my Finnshifters series and a novella before.
So, places. What else? Well, how about that time when I saw a glimpse of a sheriff in a show on TV and then later that day, I read something with supernatural beings in it, and a muse popped up, insisting I write a story about a newly appointed sheriff of a little town somewhere, who is human and has no idea there even is a supernatural world out there, let alone that his new hometown is the setting for a lot of things that aren’t explained by common sense….
There are WIPs I have, like that one set in England, where one MC is a former dancer, because I just had to write a tragic story for a dancer after watching too many episodes of So You Think You Can Dance? in a row.
Or years ago, before I wrote my first novel, By Any Other Name, I loved the song I’m Not Jesus by Apocalyptica, and somehow that song ended up being poor Skye’s background in some way.
Sometimes I read someone else’s book, or maybe fan fiction, and their ideas spark my own, often very different ones. They might be my takes on the same general concept, with my personal twist on them, but oftentimes, stories spark more stories.
One of my favorite plot bunnies always comes back to me when I walk my dogs at the nearby river during nighttime. See, here in Finland, in the height of summer, the day length is over 20 hours and 30 minutes. It means that it’s light enough to go outside at whatever time you want, and we just love nights when it’s cooler and quieter.
The bunny is this: the river, peacefully as it flows, falls in love with the wind and the way it sometimes cools it or makes it run faster. And the wind, the wind loves the river back, but their romance is thwarted by the sun, who makes the water evaporate, and only during the dark winter months can the lovers be together, but by then, the river freezes over, and can only feel its lover’s caress through the icy blanket and when snow swirls along it during blizzards.
At least there’s always spring, when the sun hasn’t gotten all of its powers back, and the ice has melted.
Blurb:
A love as easy as breathing.
Life started out rocky for Devin Rice, but it’s turned out pretty well. He has adoptive parents and a brother who love him, and he works as a coder for his dad’s video game company. Romance is scarce, but a chance encounter leads to more than he ever expected.
While dropping off an assignment for his sick brother, Dev meets his mentor. Art history professor Seth Kent is brilliant and gorgeous, just what Dev has been looking for. Except that he’s in a long-term committed relationship.
Seth’s partner, Leaf, is older and sees the world differently due to his unusual upbringing. To him, the clear attraction between Seth and Dev isn’t a problem, it’s an unexpected gift. After all, Leaf is often on the road, going wherever rescue dogs need rehabilitation.
When Leaf meets Dev, all the missing pieces fall into place, and three men from different worlds and at different points in life fill each other’s empty spaces. For them, building a future together is the most natural thing in the world. But their unconventional love causes waves in their careers and family dynamics, and each man has his own doubts and fears to overcome.

Tia Fielding is a thirtysomething Scandinavian who is a lover of witty people, words, cats, sarcasm, autumn, and the tiny beautiful things in life. Tia struggles with stubborn muses and depression, but both are things she has learned to live with. Tia identifies as genderqueer, but isn’t strict about pronouns. Why? Because luckily, in her native language there aren’t gender-specific pronouns. Being a reclusive author living with her fur-babies is another fact of life for Tia, among the need to write that seems to be a part of her psyche by now. In 2013 one of Tia’s novels was recognized by the industry’s Rainbow Awards in the Best LGBT Erotic Romance (Bobby Michaels Award) category.
