BLURB:
Senate candidate Parker Livingston chose his political dreams over a future with the man he loved. He lives with constant regret about not having Jackson Kane in his life. Or his bed. And when a strange woman is found murdered in Parker’s apartment, Jackson is the only person Parker trusts to help clear his name.
Jackson never forgave Parker for the way their relationship ended. He moved on, built a name for himself as a criminal defense attorney and swore he’d never let heartbreak back in. But when Parker shows up on his doorstep, wild-eyed and handsome and desperate for his help, Jackson can’t say no. Parker is a lot of things, but he’s no murderer.
Forced back together, searching for answers, their attraction returns with a vengeance. Any distraction—personal or professional—could be deadly. The murderer is still at large, and he’s made it clear one of them is his next victim.
REVIEW:
Jackson Kane left the DA’s office due to the gruesome nature of the crimes he was prosecuting. It was too much for him to take. Even so, he was one of the best. Now with his own practice dealing in white collar crimes, he has the money, he has the suits, but he misses the love of his life – even though he can’t forgive the man for choosing career over love.
For Parker Livingston – Politics is his life; he wants to make changes from within and is a candidate for the Senate. All his life he has tried to make those around him proud of him, but he questions whether, trying to make a difference in his particular way, was worth losing the man he knew he couldn’t replace. So, as the blurb says, a dead girl turns up in his apartment. Not a good thing for a person on the campaign trail. Positive he was about to be accused of a murder he didn’t commit, he goes to the only man he can trust – the man he’d been together with for eight years. A man he hadn’t seen for five years. Even though said man may throw him out on his ear.
Despite the fact that the blurb says “The murderer is still at large, and he’s made it clear one of them is his next victim”. and I didn’t find that part in the book, certainly not a specific note to that effect – there was something about this story that kept me glued to my screen.
As they battle their emotions – the tension between Parker and Jackson jumps off the page. And a good dose of nostalgia feeds their attraction. Unfortunately, no matter what they do or don’t want, the fact that neither is prepared to alter their chosen paths is a brick wall between them. Parker is a closeted politician, Jackson is an out and proud Lawyer with no intention of becoming a secret.
Regardless – have an itch – will scratch – produces some juicy, steaming moments along with the phrases akin to, “We shouldn’t be doing this.”
While reading, in one breath I was hoping with all my heart that they’d get back together, in another my heart was almost breaking. Suffice as to say, my emotions got a good work out. What happens in the end, you’ll have to read to find out. But, I will tell you – the drama increases.
The cast members are all superb characters, and I was impressed that there was no clear person in the frame for the murder. The wording made me think it could be one of several. Kudos to the author for keeping me guessing until the last possible moment.
Damage Control was a book of mainly emotional drama with a slither of physical drama. Imagine the TV series, The West Wing, in a hotel room with CSI knocking on the door, and Law and Order providing emotional backup.
