BLURB:
Dane’s a Decrypter down on his luck — after accidentally dispatching the wrong creature, he’s sent to a small town where the cryptids he hunts are sparse. Crypt Coffee becomes his business front, but instead of a thrilling new mission on the side, he’s stuck sending ghosts back to where they came from. Dane can annoy customers, at least, and tries to scare off Professor Sean Sanderson when he starts poking around too much.
But Sean isn’t about to stay away. Not when he hears about the murder of a former student, and definitely not if young, exciting Dane has information about it. But the more he allows himself to get dragged into this supernatural world of monsters and ghosts, the more the danger escalates. And if Sean and Dane aren’t careful, tracking down a murderer who can use magic might just get them killed.
REVIEW:
I’m not quite sure what to think about this book. Overall, the plot was good but man did Dane just kinda turn me off from a lot. He was such a dick! And how Sean tolerated it, I will never know. Most of the time when you read a book, the assholes that are the MCs usually have some redeeming qualities, but I didn’t see much of that from Dane.
Sean has seen something that keeps haunting him and so he takes some time to himself in this weirdo coffee shop to try to get some info without being bothered by students or faculty. He witnessed a murder by a ….canine like thing. Werewolf? Is it possible? Dane brings him a muffin to go with his coffee and sees what Sean is looking at but doesn’t say anything. But what gets Sean is that as he was fixing to leave, he sees a ghost. But it couldn’t be. Yet there one is. He follows the ghost down some stairs and is doubly shocked at the weapons that are all over this room. What is going on? Eventually he finds out that Dane is working for a group called The Order. The police version of the paranormals. And there’s been another murder. This time by poisoning. As Sean and Dane try to figure it out, they encounter witches with attitudes, Bigfoot that is fully Big, and other things that almost kill them. More than once. Will they figure out the murder of this girl before they themselves die?
I guess if I had Dane’s job, I’d be a bit of an ass too, but not that bad I don’t think. But having to kill things every time you turn around can’t exactly be fun. His life isn’t an easy one so getting involved with someone is hard for him. So I get that. I get him not wanting to get too close to Sean in case something happens. But man, sometimes you need to drop that dickishness. (Yes I made up that word lol). And Sean, the poor guy. Just a middle age, kinda boring professor that gets his world turned upside down. I mean not only is he encountering all these different paranormals, he has to deal with the threat of being mind wiped by the Order for being involved in something he shouldn’t be. But something calls him to Dane and he can’t stay away. In spite of how Dane treats him. SMH. I don’t know. The things we are attracted to, I guess. And being intrigued by what Dane is doing doesn’t help. Apparently he has a death wish lol. Or thinking with his little head instead of his big one. Well, that goes for both of them.
If you can get past Dane being such an asshole, this isn’t too bad of a book. Kind of a mystery figuring out the murder, but suspense in wondering if they will live or die themselves. Give it a try and see what you think. Happy reading!
